How low is really too low?

My monitor is currently running 1024x768@43Hz
Isn't the standard supposed to be like 75Hz or something now?

43Hz really can't be good for my eyes??

60Hz is a good rate. 75Hz is even a better rate.

43Hz is not recommendable, and I suggest you get a new monitor if that is all your current supports.

Well, it does do 60Hz @ 640x480, but I'm really not sure I want to go that small.

Yes, buy a new one. Something I know I need to do. The only problem with that is a little something called money. Maybe in a few months...

Okay here is what I suggest:

Use your current resolution but look outside at objects far away every five minutes.

Or

Rob a bank, panhandle or rob little old ladies of their money.

Umm I don't suggest the latter...

how do I test refresh rate?

Should be in the settings... it tells you...

I have 60Hz, I think...

I press the menu button, and it says:

FV - 60Hz

I have 800x600 and 100 MHz

You mean 100Hz? Well that isn't really possible in my honest opinion because the best I have seen monitors go up to is 83Hz.

Bruce

Actually, I've seen a Sony that can do 800x600 @ 125Hz. It'll do 1600x1200 @ 85Hz. It's a $1000 CRT though.

Many monitors are well capable of 85Hz or more.

100 Hz is most definitely possibly. The ViewSonic G90f is my current monitor and they advertise 1024x768 @ 118Hz.

Considering this monitor is at least a year old I'm sure you'll find more impressive numbers on newer models. I think one of the determining factors is LCD or CRT as the numbers for LCD's tend to be a lot lower.

I would suggest 75 Hz as the absolute minimum. Most guides say 80 is the lowest for "flicker free". Unfortunately, my monitor doesn't support 80 Hz in 1024x768.

85mhz 1024x768

60Hz is a good rate again I will say, canuckkev.

I may have been mistaken when I said 83Hz that was on my old 17". My newer one can power up to 100Hz.

Daniel... you mean Hz.

Edit: You know actually to think of it this monitor right now I have can do up to 120Hz at 800X600.

Most LCD screens will run at 60Hz, however LCDs are different than CRTs.

The refresh rate on a LCD doesn't make as much of a difference as in CRTs since there is no such thing as flicker with an LCD. LCD pixels stay on until "told to do otherwise" rather than a CRT where the pixel needs to be refreshed. This is also the reason why LCDs are easier on the eyes.

60 Hz might have been good 5 years ago, but on a 17" monitor now, a refresh rate lower than 75 has visible flickering, which causes more strain on your eyes.

Sure its okay to run at 60 Hz, just don't spend hours on the computer then.

I tend to disagree... 60Hz did nothing damaging to my eyes.

in my monitor config setting my max possible = 120Hz at 800x600
but I can't find how much it currently is

Mine's 60Hz and cannot increase and decrease.

Normally if you lower the resolution you can get higher rates.

Anyway I don't see any flickering.

Okay I guess your monitor only has that rate then. It is a good decent rate... and doesn't hurt your eyes as much as lower ones.

ok I found it, current max refresh rate = 117.2 Hz

I have 1024x768 at 84hz.

60Hz should be the minimum safe refresh rate your monitor should be set at, however the faster the better. for me, have a problem looking at 60Hz since I'm the type that gets headaches easily. there was a study a few years ago on monitor refresh rates on worker productivitiy/stress in large corporate offices and it was found that people using 60Hz refresh rates tended to have eye fatigue sooner than those using higher refresh rates.

It was recommended that the optimal refresh setting should be around 75Hz, but higher the better. 75Hz is fine for most people but I know some people who have problems with 75Hz and need at least 85Hz and up...

if your monitor can handle a higher refresh rate at your preferred screen resolution, then go ahead and raise it..
