I currently have a Gateway 2000 PC. When I get some money put a side I would like to build my next computer since my Gateway 2000 is way out of date.

Whats the brand of your PC or MAC? Did you build it or is it one of the popular manufacturers name brand?

Just figured I would get a survey going.

HP, IBM, Apple, and a several defunct companies. Of the two new computers, they're both brand-name pre-configured stuff, I don't have the patience to build anything like that myself nor do I have any real desire to.

I payed a guy to build mine, so, custom I suppose. You should ask a mod to add custom to the list.

I don't know why anybody would mess with any of the big major corporations to build their computer, while putting below average parts in there. I am proud I build my own because I only get the best parts possible. No doubt about it.

By the way isn't it HPQ now? Compaq and HP merged didn't they?

Yes, they "merged", but they still have their own products and own names.

...because I couldn't build mine for less than I paid ($500):

Gateway 6400:
(1) Intel Pentium III Processor 933Mhz w/256K cache (dual processor upgradeable)
128MB PC133 SDRAM
(1) 9GB IBM Ultra 160 SCSI NSCA 7200RPM
Dual Channel Ultra160 SCSI

I still would never buy a computer from a company.... and just got to know where to get the best deals...

Same here. I would never purchase a system from any company, much cheaper to built my own. Besides, building your own system, makes it fun and enjoyable using your system later. It's cool to see a system you built up and running and knowing EVERY PIECE of hardware the exists in there and where it is and how it's setup.

I mean some of those deals look tempting for the price. and I wouldn't mind having a Dell system (nice and new), but I prefer custom built computers.

As far as laptops go, I would purchase either a Dell or Sony.. Unless I can built my own ?? hehe.

I do, however, have a HP computer sitting next to me. it was given to me to play around with. All my other systems (10 or so) are customed built.

I'm about to upgrade this puppy and welcome a new computer to the family (very soon).

Ummm, there is nothing wrong with buying your computer from a corporation, sometimes it is cheaper.
But I do build my own. For personal use but my family owns a gateway and a HP

I've found that here it is usually much more expensive to buy a brand name computer; so yeah... all of our computers are clones.
