Hello to everyone in the forum. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm doctor haldol. I'm 31 and from the lovely state of New Jersey (aka, New Joisey ;)). I've been lurking around this joint for quite a while and decided to join in the posting fun! This is a great forum and always has great info. Anyway, I had a question and I thought that this would be a good place to ask.

I have been looking around at paid hosting for my impending website. I've tried many of the free hosts out there, and while many are good, I think that paid hosting is the way to go (I was using Netcabins and they were great, but they have been having some problems lately). I've pretty much decided on Worldzone Pro.

Anyway, I have three domains registered with domaindirect (aka tucows). I'm trying to figure out how to change the DNS names. The Control Panel at the domaindirect site dosen't have this option. If I surf on over to OpenSRS and use their managment panel, I can change the DNS there. Is this the only way to change the DNS for a domaindirect domain? I just want to make sure I don't screw anything up. Anyone with any experience with domaindirect? Also, domaindirect gives email with each domain. If I change the DNS at OpenSRS, does that affect the email at domaindirect or will it still work correctly?

I hope that all made sense. Anyway, thanks again for all the great info on this site. Reading this forum is fast becoming a nightly ritual for me.

Peace,
Doc Haldol

Welcome Doc!!!

You said:

-I'm unfamiliar with domaindirect, but using the OpenSRS site will work just fine and won't screw up anything.

I will say however, if domaindirect gives you email (guessing forwarding), then it is more than just changing nameservers. They must offer some form of DNS control, which you'd lose by changing the nameserver (DNS) info at OpenSRS.

Simplified diagram:
Registrar > Nameservers (DNS) > Server (where site is).

By changing the middle one, you'd lose control over whatever domaindirect provides, like email. It isn't that you can't have email, just that you wouldn't be able to control it through them anymore. I fear this explanation is terribly confusing...

Thanks Chicken,

Actually, that makes sense and its pretty much what I suspected. I just wasn't sure. It would be nice if domaindirect ever responded to their email...;). I'm begining to wonder if I should transfer my domains to a registrar with better support and more flexible control of the domains. Any sugestions?

Many people seem to like:
http://www.000domain.com (but I'd say try http://www.weblaunching.net ).

Also, places like http://www.regsiterfly.com etc... really it sounds like you picked a dud and I'd just say, Fuhhhhhgeddddabout'em and switch to a place that will at least respond to you if you have a question.

I am from CT, so I am fluent in Joisey...

Yeah, I sure can pick 'em. Definitely a dud. I should have known better. I always thought that those two damn cows had an evil glint in their eyes!;) Well, I won't register any more domains with them. I certainly won't renew any with them either.

I looked at those registrars as well as dotster.com. They all look like they have good deals. At those prices, I may just have to register a few more domains. Anyway, I'm looking into switching my domains to one of these other guys. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm glad to hear you're a local boy and get the Joisey lingo. Ya' know what I'm sayin'? CT...hmmmm...isn't that also one of those NY suburbs? :D

Thanks for your help!

I should have said, I *was* from CT, as I've moved to Southern California since. (Got tired of the lack of gang violence, fresh air, and uncongested freeways that Connecticut had to offer). :)
