Perhaps you could provide us with some specific error messages if you're getting any?
How are you entering the site? Via the "Windows Update" option on the start menu? Or from within IE?

Andy.

It's fixed now, but under pick updates to install, it forever remains at 0%.

Actually I fixed that for him too...In case anyone searches for this...it was because the windows built in firewall was turned on for his NIC

Not one to normally support Microsoft, but there was nothing in his statement to say that it was a "default".
The dozen or so machines that i've installed XP on to recently have not had the firewall turned on for the NIC, only the net connection, and then only after running the Internet Connection Wizard.

The firewall was only on because you have to connect to your DSL provider manually. If your DSL was by default an "always" connection it would not have been turned on. It is fixed now!

The reason why windows update didn't work is likely because your ISP has ports blocked that windows update would normally use so when it used a different port it was one blocked by the firewall. It is not microsoft's or your fault. Just mis-fortune. But that is what you have to get used to with computers anyway

By the way have you found the reply to the auto-dial thingy?

I think I might know why! mess with your network settings and see if you can get it to recognize it as an always on connection go to internet set up wizard and follow that

Tell it you have a broadban connection and I think there is an option that says wether it is always on or not
