Well.. it's time for me to purchase a laptop.

I really don't like laptops since they aren't custom built by me (like my home systems).

So now my question is, which is a good company to get a laptop from? I'm willing to spend up to $1900 dollars for a laptop.

I'm in the market for a 15" screen with a 30gig hard drive, 256mb of ram, Windows XP Pro (not home) and at least a 1.8ghz Intel system (AMD preferred). CD/DVD (CD-RW if cheap)

I've looked at Dell (came out to $2207). I might go with Dell. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Dont go for Sony - Vaio. I had experience with it and i DIDNT like them. I hate them.

Compaq is very good.

This retailer seems good:

For laptop brands, I would suggest a Sony Vaio. MY DAD HAS ONE AND IT IS JUST FINE. Infact it is much better than any laptop he has had before.

DCI:

Powerbook G4 w/ OS X : worth every penny I paid for it.

However, since you're looking for a PC laptop -- I know many people with Dells and they have been very happy. I also know people with Compaq laptops and they've had nothing but trouble with them.

30GB 4200 RPM ATA100

That is probably the best choice considering the price is actually relatively low for such specifications... I never knew Alienware made laptops...

I would recommend Toshiba. Besides being innovative (manf. of the world's thinnest notebook), they provide excellent support.

It's imperative that the laptop I purchase comes with Windows XP Pro. Toshibas only come with Home Edition.

You could get a better deal if you buy it and install it yourself but if you get the alienware it comes with it automatically unless you call I believe

I'll probably go with Dell or Alienware.

When it comes to laptops, get the best you can get because you dont upgrade laptops like you upgrade regular computers.

I dont want to format the laptop and put pro edition right away. I prefer if it came with it.

Well I will just say Alienware is 100% better than dell they have THE BEST service my friend has one and he dropped it coming from a lan party they came to his house and said it was unfixable so they sent him a new one with 2-day fed ex. He even told him it was because he dropped it. They have a 1 year warranty no matter what you do

It's between Alienware and Dell.

Dell is a good company. I trust them.

I'll probably get a dell. "Dude your getting a dell!"

Anyhow, I'll never be 100% satisified with my laptop. I will always say "damn I wish it had .."

Oh well. I just need it to last me through college. (8-10 years)

Go with Alienware.... I mean they only make quality things.... pero hay una problema... you can´t upgrade them as easily as a desktop... sure you can upgrade the RAM but you cannot change the motherboard in a laptop.

And Ashben... sure... whatever... my dad´s Sony Vaio is good enough for my usage.

Robert

GC:

Yea.. that's the only problem. But hey, upgrading Ram and a hard drive isn't hard.

Alienware seems a little overpriced.

The system at Alienware came out to $2400 something

The system at Dell came out to $2,222.

Same system. Different manufactor.

I'm only 18. I have to really think about it.

Look, have you considered IBM? Their Thinkpads are some of the top laptops in the world. I know everyone's been talking about dell and alienware, but IBM's not bad either. If you're really low on funds, I suggest a Dell. If you want a kick---- gaming laptop, get alienware. But if you want a quality powerful and mobile laptop in between, I suggest IBM. Look mainly in either the T-series (more mobile) or A-series (more powerful).

I have not heard good things about IBM they are nice and all but I really haven't seen an enexpensive IBM notepad that was well powered with good components

IBM's have those stupid little er... pointer things dont they?

You know the things I mean? Instead of a mouse?

Cool laptops have the touch pad... and then theres those ----ty one's that have that completely useless little red stick thing between some keys that you're meant to guide around with your finger...

I could be wrong... but if it's not IBM, whatever brand it is... is ----. :D

My sister has got an IBM Thinkpad and yes, it uses that red stick.

IMO, it's better than the touchpad.

guitarnerd
June 20th, 2002, 14:11
I really don't like the touch pad I prefer the little red stick and whenever possible I just use a mouse for lap tops. My boss's old computer was a laptop with the touchpad and the red stick. Well I liked the red stick and I would use it but sometimes when I was typing I Would accidentally touch the touchpad and it would select all of the text and erase it. We are talking 10-20 pages of this

SN 4937539 SQ 2958493 Charcol black

At first I was using notepad and after about 5 pages I did that and hit a couple letters before I noticed and since notepad only has 1 undo I was screwed :(

So has the Thread Starter decided on what he wants to buy?
