Okay thanks, Jan...

Results for today:
China/Brazil: 0/4
Italy/Croatia: 1/2
South Africa/Slovenia: 1/0

Monday Predictions:

South Korea/United States - Hmm... sorry Americans, I have to go with South Korea on this one.
Poland/Portugal - Both have below average teams... but I would have to say Portugal...
Beligum/Tunisia - Belgium probably...

Edit: Brazil had 4, not 3. :p Poor China.

My predictions for wednesday:

England vs. Nigeria
2-1
I think England will win because they played good against Argentina.

Argentina vs. Sweden
1-0
Argentina will win but I'm not sure why.

Argentina better win... and more than 1 point.

Tuesday Games:

France versus Denmark: Come on Denmark....
Uruguay versus Senegal: Tough call.. probably Uruguay
Germany versus Cameroon: I want Cameroon to win
Ireland versus Saudi Arabia: Definitely Ireland

Argentina will lose. Sweden play very much like England played, and Argentina was impotent once England fell back into their bunker defense.

Korea will lose. Sorry American bashers, this is our year to go on to the second round. The US is as physical as Korea and has more players who can score. The US is faster and more fit, and has a number of wins in front of a hostile crowd.

Denmark will finish the demoralization of France. I've never seen so many people make excuses for a team not being ready for the World Cup before. France simply let their egos get in the way of becoming match ready, and they are paying the price.

Germany will destroy Cameroon. Germany probably has the strongest team in the tournament.

Ireland will roll over Saudi Arabia.

Poland beats Portugal, before being beaten by the US 1-0.

Argentina will NOT lose. They had a bad day yesturday, and it is historical this team has at least one bad day. When it plays Sweden, there will be no doubts who will win. Argentina.

And the US beating South Korea? That is so funny... I don't even want to comment. Even if they do, they won't last against any of the countries in the second round. Spain already has qualified. They quashed two teams they played against.

haha, portugal hardly has a below average team... they have one of the better teams in this world cup, they made one really poor match against the us though... this is the most interesting world cup i´ve ever seen, there´s really no way of telling who´s gonna win...

as for monday´s matches i think south korea will tie the americans 2-2, portugal will beat poland 3-1 and belgium will beat tunisia 2-0...

and i think england will beat nigeria, nigeria doesn´t have anything to play for anymore... sweden-argentina should be interesting, sweden only needs to tie that game so i´m guessing they´ll push for an early goal if possible and then back down... i think it´ll end either 0-0 or 1-1...

Argentina will make it.... at least 76% of Argentines will say so... hey Argentina does have the best team in the world but even it has its bad days.

spork
June 8th, 2002, 10:47
they´ve had at least 2 bad days in this world cup so far then... they weren´t convincing against nigeria or england and if they don´t play better than that they won´t win against sweden...

but yeah, argentina normally has one of the best teams in the world...

I think Nigeria had a good day that one day... Argentina will most likely win against Sweden if not you can expect people here to burn down the Congress, taking their anger out on the politicans if the team loses against Sweden.

Alright whatever you say... maybe because they didn't have Maradona... I certainly hope you know who he is... one of the most famous soccer players in the world. He was finally allowed into Japan.

The US will perform poorly in the second round if it makes it that is.

There is no need to insult me. Not all Americans are football illiterate. I played the game for more than 10 years, and have coached at top youth levels in the US for more than 20 years. I suspect I have much more real experience with the game than most fans from countries where football is played with the foot...

I've also seen my share of international games in person all over the world, including games where Argentine was a much better side than they have shown in this Cup. They have clearly not put together a strong effort yet this year. They may, but they were totally inept against England's bunker defense - and rarely put a challenge on the goalkeeper.

Argentina had a real hard time finishing - with virtually no shots that were on goal. It's hard to win when you don't actually shoot at the net...

Argentina has had its share of problem... but I can point out where you people are mistaken, this team will not draw or be defeated by Sweden. They are under severe pressure to win because the people here in Argentina are not very happy because of the crisis amongst other things. Give them a damn break for a second.

Thewitt, that is where you are wrong they did put up a lot of challanges... either that or you haven't watched that game.

Additionally the US team if it gets past South Korea by some miracle will be put in front of some very difficult teams that it probably could not even be a match to. I will tell you one thing there is no way the US will get pass Spain. The Spanish team is promising not to repeat pass mistakes where it gets knocked off in the second round and I believe they can break that occurance. Because the Spanish team has been rebuilt recently by one famous super-star like Maradona, so expect no mercy from the Spanish team.

The crisis and the people can't win games for them... Maybe they're pressured to win games but the situation in Argentina isn't going to help them get through to the second round.

It won't take a miracle for USA to beat South Korea but they'll probably get kicked out in the 2nd round having to play either Italy, Croatia or Mexico.

Seriously, it'd be really interesting to see the no. 1 favorite and the defending champion to be eliminated in the first round. ;)

No kidding. Did I ever suggest that? No I did not, I said maybe it would help the people's spirits here that if the Argentine team beats Sweden. And hands down, I think it will.

Just imagine USA playing Spain... that would be a very funny match. Spain will beat the US like it did with Slovenia and Paraguay, only this time 6-1 or something.

i hope japan makes it far too, they played a very entertaining kind of football...

Ecuador/Mexico: I want Ecuador to win this one for some strange reason
Japan/Russia: Russia might but again a hard call

Wait, it's impossible. Germany is playing Cameroon next and whoever wins is going to go on to the next round with Ireland, because Ireland is going to beat Saudi Arabia.

Well, unless they tie. That would change some things.

Well. The US got a draw against Korea, 1:1. They had the lead till the 73rd minute when Korea got a header to the post to tie it up. I was disappointed, but that said, the US deserved to lose the game, but Friedel(sp?) was spectacular, blocking many shots including a PK. I wish my keeper skills were up to his. :D Also, IMO, the reffing was very good, with maybe a couple of questionable calls or misses, but overall a good game.

The draw gives the US the advantage, as Korea plays Portugal next, while the US plays Poland. If Portugal beats Poland, all the US needs to advance is for them to beat Poland or Korea to beat Portugal I believe. If POR and POL tie, the US and Korea just needs a draw to advance.

I am not underestimating them. I am saying though that playing Poland is better than playing Portugal. They are considered the weakest team in the group. That doesn't mean they are an automatic win though. Far from it. Any team that is in the World Cup is a quality team.

Giancarlo

There is a very small possibility.

But now those odds are almost for Argentina, since one time big star Diego Maradona has been allowed to watch the game in Japan... Sweden will have its bad day. :biggrin2:

And Baty (Batistuta) won't be taken off so quickly like what happened in the last game.

USA- Beat Porutgal, and in World Cup qualifying, at one time, they went on an unbeatable streak, then they faltered, but they got the last win they needed to move on. They are a quality team, ranked number 11 by FIFA.

Don't know a lot about China's performance.

Korea- Host team, and no host team in my recollection has ever failed to advanced to the 2nd round.

One thing you forget about teams in the World Cup except for the previous champion and the host country, is the fact that the teams have to earn their way by beating other teams in their area. The US had to advance through CONCAF(sp?). Its not like they were given the spot. They had to earn it.

I think the idea that the US isn't good is based on past performances, but this year, they have had a good showing, beating Portugal and tying the host team(even though they were dominated that game).

I never implied that the teams in the World Cup are the only good teams. Just that the teams in the World Cup are quality teams themselves.

there´s a big chance argentina won´t make it, they´re in pretty much the same position as france, they need to win to have any chance of advancing, and they need to win by more than one goal (assuming nigeria doesn´t kick englands butt of course)... i don´t think they´ll make it, and i don´t think france´ll make it either... there goes the 2 big favorites...

And the US is anything but a quality team. They just had luck. Beating Portugal does not happen all the time... now Portugal has a quality team they just had a bad day.

Giancarlo, just because Beckham beat Argentina and you didn't want it to happen doesn't mean that he's making the world cups bad. He's an interesting player even though I don't like him as much.

Germany scores most of it's goals of crosses and corners. If teams don't know how to stop that they will lose to Germany. Kahn is awesome in goals and that's another plus for the Germans. Germans player who has 5 goals has scored all of the with his head and has the most goals in the world cup.

I though that the Germany/Cameroon game was reffereed horribly. What was that? So many cards for no reason. And I hate the call where the ref gave Zige a yellow for pulling that guys jersey and didn't give anything to the other guy who was doing even more mess. The linesman was there too. What was he looking at?

This world cup is being refed horribly. Unbelieveable

Yes indeed.

Argentina still could not shoot at the goal - two games in a row where the keeper only had to make 2 saves in the game. Lots of flash on the field but no finish. Bunker defense destroyed them just like against England. The only Argentina goal scored in an illegal encroachment of a penalty kick where Argentina was in the penalty area before the ball was kicked. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Another super-arrogant team goes home.

What a great tournament this has been so far!

This is probably it. This country is going to completely collapse now. I predicted yes they would win against Sweden because Sweden is a lousy team. But I guess they just couldn´t. I was hoping to wake up to good news but the news wasn´t good at all.

Now I have to cheer for my home country. The usual team that ends up third or fourth favorites everytime. They are one of the last traditional players in the World cup, Spain. They are known for their great playing.

Why exactly would I want to hate a country I care very little about anyway? All I know about them is that they have a good soccer team and they were the no. 1 favorite to win the Wolrd Cup. And no offense to you Brits, but England tied with Nigeria. Just as I was predicting. The English team is pretty bad and just got into the next round by mere luck and will have to face the stellar Spanish team sometime soon. If a round like that occurs, where it is England versus Spain I will certainly watch it.

Spain has gone undefeated in the past three games...

But their past record suggests that they tend to tire themselves once they reach the final rounds of the tournament.

Giancarlo

I agree with you (and that hasn't been hard :) ). This world cup has been full of surprises. If Spain does play like they are, they can go a long way. spain has been agood so far... they haven´t played any really good teams yet but i think they can go far this year...

looking on the teams in the next round so far:

Germany-Paraguay: 1-0 (Germany´s team have been a nice surprise, at least for me, so far. Don´t think they´ll be able to score many goals on paraguay)
Denmark-England: 2-0 (Denmark has been great so far, england hasn´t)
Sweden-Senegal: 2-1 (Senegal has done more than anyone expected of them, and hopefully their journey ends here, Sweden is a better team, i just hope they can prove that on sunday)
Spain-Ireland: 1-1 (Ireland doesn´t play beautyful football but they fight hard, i think spain will win on a golden goal though, but ireland could surprise us all)

It always helps me to remember the average age of the people on this forum - then I can take a step back and smile instead of getting upset. Personal attacks generally result from a lack of maturity and the inability to accept critism of your position on an issue without taking it personally. Both are traits that are generally grown out of as you experience more in life - not always, but generally.

http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/poll.php?s=&action=showresults&pollid=233

It will take many more years of viewing football at this level before many of the people who posted in the thread above have an understanding of why Sweden was the better team in the game with Argentina, and why England did not need to score a goal against Nigeria to advance. England played a brilliant game against Nigeria, and advanced as planned. A goal would have been nice, but as it turned out, it was not necessary. England, not needing to score if it kept Nigeria out of the net, did not. Sorry if this is not a style of football that appeals to you - but it works and has worked well for them in this tournament.

Honestly I would have expected some of this rhetoric from American fans who just discovered the game, rather than from a self-described expert.

It's all about advancing - not about how many goals you scored. Those teams who configure their style of play to give themselves the best chance of moving forward may not be the most exciting to watch, but they do stand a higher chance of winning than those who don't.

I don't believe England's strategy would work with Brasil. They have real solid finishing skills, and would definately put a couple in the back of the net.

It worked well with Nigeria simply because they don't finish well. Yes, they gave England a good run, but you have to put many more shots on goal - make the keeper work - if you plan to defeat that bunker defense strategy.

You can dislike the style of play all you want, when goal differential is not interesting, and all you need is a draw to advance, it is very effective to play for the draw if you have that kind of defensive ability. They executed it very, very well against both Argentina and Nigeria.

Brasil will simply penetrate the wall of defenders and score - so England will need to score as well. That would be a much better match - where goals are required, not simply nice to have.

Just figured it out .. Jan had a similar concern.

See, earlier three matches were scheduled each day at different hours. Now as the tournament is gaining momentum, four matches are played each day. Two of the four matches are played at the same time (simaltaneuosly in different cities) and same goes for the other two. Now, the TV channels cannot possibly cover two live matches at the same time so what some of us see are (slightly) delayed repeats.

There you go :tired2:

The ref even blew the whistle early when it was obvious that neither team was going to do anything like risk an injury in extra time...

My son did not understand and screamed at the TV for either team to attack the ball and try to score a goal - but it was pretty funny to see.

I think that Mexico earned much more respect in the way they played this game than anyone expected. Italy was nearly KNOCKED OUT in round one. The players certainly know who controlled this game, and it was not Italy

USA has been better then i thought and Poland hasn´t been nearly as good as they were in the preliminary competition, maybe now that they have nothing to play for they can play some decent football...

It is unbelievable.

Poland plays their best game of the tournament with 6 players on the pitch who did not play in the first two games and kills the US 3-1.

Korea beats Portugal 1-0.

US advances and will play Mexico on Monday.

What an unbelievable Cup this has been!

Germany VS Paraguay.. tomorrow... what do ya'll predict? I think it will be a close game with a lot of chances for Santa Cruz... eventually Germany will win by one. I hope Chilavert goes outside his goal to shoot one of his gay free kicks and Germany gets them on a counter attack. Germany is playeing withotu 3 starters be cause of the Yellows in the previos game. So what do ya'll think?

I think Germany will win. I am hoping that England will win against Denmark as well. I heard something happened to Denmark's top scorer so if he doesn't play then England could stand a good chance.

nitroboy

what about Brazil - Belgium ??
I know Brazil is favourit but I actually think they won't win as easy as the match against China
I even think Belgium will have a decent chance if they have a good day (not like the matches in the 1st round where they performed quite poor)

adizlaja

The Brazilians had a easy group, but they did the best of it. They better be ready for some better competition or they will be out.

USA - Mexico? Mexico is playing really good right now, but from the last few matches between these two countries, USA has been better. Both countries know how to play each other. This should be interesting.

I don't think it was very surprising to see USA beating Mexico. LIke I said, they know each other's style since they play each other pretty often. :D

But sadly, their journey will end against Germany, since that's their next opponent. :(

There's the "Official Anthem" by Vangelis. Search for "2002 FIFA World Cup Official Anthem". You hear it everytime a match is about to start when they show you the starting lineups and stuff.
