can you turn that option off or does it get moved to a different folder where it is still avaliable because if not, it isn't actually that clever an idea, because I recieve emails from people who I don't know about my site and most of the time I just can't be bothered adding friends to my address book

No, the spamfree feature once you sign up for it is permanent.

What you can do is have a free account and a spam free account for your important people.
