There's been a lot of people on this forum looking for free remotely hosted bulletin boards. Then comes the recommendation of the "best" service. I'm pretty sure there are programmers who come in here seeking what ppl justify as the "best".
I am one of them. I've been reading each and every post, analyzing each remotely hosted board and I still have to reach why these hosts are justified as the "best".
What I'm looking for in this thread is what people seeking remotely hosted solutions actually want. The number of features that a service has to offer does not necessary mean it's a good service. Multitude of popup banners can degrade the quality of service offer to members of a community.
Down time, resource hogs, and bugs are other problems that each service will come across.
All that set aside, I think these services on the market today doesn't offer the real solution for building a sucessfull community.
Most communities that offer other services than just a bulletin board generally do better. Take for example Flashkit.com and were-here.com, both have a huge members database for the bulletin board, but they also offer other services like resources, tutorials, news, downloads, etc.
So my question is if given the opportunity to add other services to their community other than just a bulletin board, will that make some impact on building your community? What "features" do you think are necessary to help build a unique community?
