Did you ever connect at a faster rate before? If so, your phone line may have recently been damaged. Or the ISP is of poor quality and cannot support full speed for it's users before.

If you never had higher than that speed, it could be the two reasons above. Or your ISP doesn't support the 56k modem you are using. There are 3 types of 56k modems (x2, Flex 56, and v. 90.) Check the type of your modem and compare it to what the ISP offers.

i can only ever connect at 28.8 but i think it is because of my distance from my isp possibly the company is redoing somethig. if it is a free ISP it is because of a higher userload. try emailing or phoneing them up to ask them WTF is going on

i am pretty sure it is a v 90, and i think the phone company told me it was a fualty phone line or something.

I've heard that cleaning the contact points on your phone line can make a big diference. Also, download the latest V.90 upgrade for your modem.

Jammed? That's probably the reason why it's so slow...

It could be the quality of the phone line itself (both the line in the wall and the one that goes from the modem to the jack.) Try this test to see if your phone line is okay.

1. Connect a phone to the jack that your modem normally uses.
2. Pick up the reciever and listen very carefully.
3. Do you here a nice smooth buzz or do you find crackles? If there are crackles, that means that your phone line is messed up. If there isn't that means the it's the ISP's or the modem's fault.

We have two different phones at home. One cackles all the time, the other's normal. (Different brands) So sometimes, you can't really tell by your telephone.

Well if you have a neighbour that is real close and you think that they have a decent phone line you could always strip a few wires take a trip into their yard find their little grey phone box strip a few more, do a little patching. and run back home and test it out. But gee i wouldnt want to condone anything illegal and i KNOW you arent that desperate.
