Windows? ;)
I'd reccomend you try and get a more stable version of the dreadful operating system, or change OSes all togeter!
Windows;

Alternate OSes;

Try Windows Millenium Edition... The most stable one I've used so far, with maybe the exception of NT4. :)

XP is next one coming. It's in beta-testing right now, but it won't be officially released until the later part of this year.

Yeah, I get those damn BSOD's all the time. Haven't pinpointed exactly why they occur, maybe it's just cause win 98 SE sucks.

I never get BSOD's unless I visit those darn web pages that invoke a BSOD :( My only problem is that it freezes randomly due to a CD WRITER I put in :( Ah.. maybe I'll by new OS when it comes out and have the "fake" windows registry so I can still play all my windows 95 era games ;)

WINDOWS XP IS A DIRECT COPY OF MAC OS X
It's absolutley typical of Microsoft, this is why they're being sued over and over...
http://www.djcl.com/macguide.png
(Whipped it up quickly, due to the previous one (much better, over 20 similarities, suddenly dissapeared! :()

Funny how I haven't seen Windows 2000 mentioned on this thread yet. Windows 2000 is much more stables than any Win9x OS and is practically as stable as NT 4 (since Windows2K is actually NT 5.) Better yet, it runs games much nicer than NT4 and supports most applications!

Possibly because nobody's using Win2k here... it seems to me everybody's using ME and 98.
XP = ?
I'm not visiting Micro----'s website, so don't give me a link.
I've heard Win2k is really stable, one of my friends uses it. Me, I'm using the bogus 98... :mad:
I hate it how in WinME (and 2k? :confused: ) some icons in the start menu don't show up unless you click on the arrow. Anybody know why they hide some of the shortcuts?

To try an confuse newbies (first time users of some functions) to spend half an hour trying to find them.
It's in Office 2000 as well! grrrr... ;)

I have noticed that mcafee virus scan makes mine bsod a lot, and any other virus scan does also, you may want to look at that.

I actually like that feature, it only shows the folders you use most often. And it can easily be turned off by going to the taskbar properties and unchecking "Use Personalized Menus".
On the MacOSX issue... mmmmmm, good lord I sure do want me a Mac. A Macintosh was the very first computer that I was ever introduced to (in a computer graphics class). And seeing as how I so desperately want to be a graphic designer... I just need a pretty Mac baaaby. Someday, someday a Mac shall be mine.
As for the BSOD, I use Windows Me, been using it ever since it was released and I have gotten the BSOD ONCE, I forget why though :confused:

One of my computers is Windows 2000 and it seems to have run without a problem for at over a year now. Just lately it started to give me blue screen errors but those are rare as well. I guess one year on any windows machine without formatting is acceptable. (See how Microsoft brainwashed me?) :)
I'm typically one of the people that say *nix is better in general but right now you can't touch some of the windows applications. Photoshop is a great example and no I don't think Gimp is on the same level. Not to mention the browsers, I'll have to try the latest Opera for nix but IE is the king. Netscape 6 / Mozilla has to many bugs for me to use it non-stop.
Eventually most of us will go to nix but not until we get a lot of 3rd party support for developing applications. Until then I'll live with one windows box and some *BSD / Linux boxes. Get the best of both worlds with two PC's. :)

Are you saying you live for computers? will you die when you purchase it? i dont know about you but my life will be almost complete when im an alzheimer's stricken wrinkled vegetable in a rusty wheelchair. and complete when i get buried in a box or burned in a furnace (baked for eternity), or who knows maybe even cryogenically frozen. my life wont be complete until i am a corpse, carcass, whatever. whether it happens tomorrow or 85 yrs from now i probably wont have an i mac in my possesion unless the KapTin leaves it in his will to me.
all this talk of veggies and death made me think of a joke. if its too off topic go ahead and delete it mod squad.
Q: What is the hardest part of a vegetable to eat?

Yes, I most certainly do live for computers... and art... and root beer... and Little Debbie™ Oatmeal Creme Pies.
Once I get an iMac I will have a huge smile on my face, while I drink root beer and eat an Oatmeal Creme Pie... then I will spill the root beer on all the wires all around the 3 computers, which will cause all three of them to explode, and cause an electrical fire, and while I try to run from the room I trip over some paintings, and I die a firey death. And a smile will be burned unto my face :)

My life will be half-complete when I become 18. Then I won't have to hear any more lectures from my mom, I can own a pet, I get to drive, I get my own cell phone.... :D

I like that. its kinda pleasant. though ive heard death by electrocution can be messy and crispy. maybe the rootbeer would cure that

Tired of the same old BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)? Want a GSOD (Green Screen of Death)? Or even a PSOD (Pink Screen of Death)? Whatever the color is, change the screen you see most with BSOD Colour Changer from some site that I found on the net! Visit http://www.intelcities.com/Coder_Canyon/alexy/software.html today! ;)

Cell phones are cool.... driving and using the phone at the same time is illegal here, so don't you worry. Besides, what I really meant was driving motorcycles, my mom won't get me a car. :( And oh, don't worry about the radiation or whatever the cell phones give off, I'll prolly use earphones.
Hey, Coolin, the URL gave me a "Cannot find Server". Maybe I'm just having bad luck?
Speaking of servers, I can't seem to connect to your site, Nick.

Boy, I feel special! :rolleyes:
BTW, I'm using DAP to download that file, and it says that I need some authentication before I can get it. Duh.... :confused: So maybe I should just disable DAP for now?

It has nothing to do with DAP... gave me forbidden access.

DAP for a 1.8kb file is useless my friend ;)

Yeah, I know downloading kb sized files with DAP is "useless", but it's still faster.
BTW, I *still* can't access it, still "forbidden". Oh, well.... I guess I'll give the URL you posted one more try.

Hmm... this is strange. The link works now. *shrugs*

Not always, if the file is 30kb or smaller and you're on a decent connection it takes 2 seconds to connect to the server and takes 1-2 seconds to get the file.
If like DAP you have to connect to multiple servers before downloading the file you have to add and extra 1-2 seconds before it starts downloading for each server.
So if you used three servers it may take 4.5-5.5 seconds to connect to them all and 1-2 second to download. Where connecting directly would only take 3-4 seconds.
So um yeah, it's "useless". ;)

March 4th, 2001, 00:19
LeX, the problem could have been a messed up router in between you and the server. That's probably the reason why you could visit some sites and not others.
LeX
March 4th, 2001, 08:45
Yeah, I guess so... I never trusted my current ISP, they say that their DSL connection is lightning fast, and it's true - only when I'm accessing their website (duh).

I am so happy you posted this heh.. I've been wondering how to disable that for the longest time (I think I even posted it on here.) Leave it up to Microsoft to call that something stupid like "personalized menus". I guess it would be too hard to have it say "show only recently accessed programs in the programs menu". Too much typing for those Microsoft programmers.
