I signed up for a spaceports account, and ftpd about 500
pages to the server. Then i realized the site had popups
in addition to the banners on the page. Also, if you type in the incorrect url they spawn about 7 windows, and its nearly impossible to close them.
This is a shame, because they have fast servers, and fast ftp. Its a shame they're ruining their service with all the popups.
Also the login page at config.spaceports.com does not work.
(At least it wasn't yesterday)

that's their only source for revenue because no ad company accepts them for some reason or another (that's what i think) and it take Steve the guy running spaceports lots of money to run it (several thousand dollars/month) and he also has to pay everyone who hosts there 10c a click on the banners...and if you have the banners you shouldn't have any popup from what i know and they might get a new ad company so they are gonna change the rules so that you have to have the banner above the fold or you'll get a popup also

and you also have to get a 0.25% click ratio so that 1 click for 400 impressions

Well they don't have the right to change my Internet Explorer start page without MY Authorisation!. I've clicked the pic link at Review My Site forum [ http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=2829 ], showered by LOTS of pop-up windows. After that I restart IE, and I found my start page has being changed. That FWP really have guts doing that!

coolguy23- Yes i understand of course it costs a lot of money. Then they should stop paying people the 10 cents a click. Also, the sites i've visited have popups even if they
have the banner. Not only that, but for a new site it's impossible to login to config.spceports.com to get the code
to put the banners on your pages. So you are stuck with the popup. I wouldn't even mind a popup, if it was just your standard banner popup. The point is that they're killing the service.

but don't u see?
spaceports.com is PURPOSELY giving 10cents to EARN more money
If they didn't offer that
people wouldn't even bother to click on the banner.
you know what I mean?

Considering that hardly anyone pays
10 cent a click anymore, i doubt that's very profitable for them especially if they have to payback some to their users. Also, by people clicking on their own banners, advertisers
will see less of a return on their investments, (because site owners will be clicking to the site and not buying anything) which will lead to less advertisers.

If I recall correctly, I remember Steve loses $60,000 annually on Spaceports.

Poor guy. Even with the pop-ups and all? Gee....
Why's he willing to lose 60 grands a year? Any particular reasons?
Oh, yeah, once I forgot to add the "~" and I got bombarded with disgusting pop-ups, and this weird chat applet window and pr0n banners. Luckily, my parents weren't around at the time. :p

well he's still running it cuz he thinks he can make a profit out of it.....and hopefully he will.....i know that you don't have to log on to get the banner code you can get it from somewhere like http://spaceports.com/code i think

I couldn't access the member sites @ Spaceports thru IE, but I was able to with NS 4.08 (I don't like the Communicator 4.7s), with the JavaScript turned off. Maybe it had something to do with the JavaScript, or maybe it was IE. Who knows?

Or do you just mean pr0n style banners and not really those banners just because they popup so much? I wouldn't expect such a large company to use the aid of such banners to increase their revenues.

Yeah.. pr0n popup. There was this middle sized popup with a pr0n ad in it. I swear. No reason for me to lie about this...

It is just sad that Spaceports has to sacrifice their own integrity by advertising porn in order to stay in business; they're worse than CROSSWINDS!!!

I'm still having trouble adjusting to this. I always thought of Spaceports as a very respectable company. This is an awful thing for Spaceports to do. Why would Steve do this?

I was quite surprised too. The 404 pages resulted in like 2-3 popup windows, one of which is an annoying chat applet... why would Spaceports do that? Just for money?? And the second time I accidentally got a 404 at Spaceports, the pr0n popup showed it. I can even sorta describe it, it's a gif that looks like the slot machine, and there was a different women in each of the 3 colums.

I have a test account with Spaceports and I keyed in a deliberate wrong URL just to, er, see this porn pop-up but there's none. The closest I can see is a medium sized suggestive "Click here to see movie" pop-up but I recognize the woman as Ling Woo in Ally McBeal. Nothing pornographic. Dang, I mean, good for Spaceports.
Maybe it was an advertiser slip-up?

Possibly. Or maybe I was having hallucinations, which is highly unlikely. Maybe I really am wrong. I do hope I am.

I don't trust warez anymore.. actually, I never did.
I got myself Photoshop 6 from mIRC, hehe... it's better (and more reliable, plus no fu(kin pr0n ads and misleading links) than warez. Bye bye Photoshop 4... (it was doing some seriously strange things)
