Youc could give newsPHP (http://nphp.net) a try.
That's the PHP newscript that I use on my sites.

yes! i love newsPHP. it takes less than 2 mins to install and configure.

Yeah newsPHP is small, easy to install, easily customizable.
And I have not yet run across any errors in it.
