What will happen? any ideas or is it "impossible for that to happen"?

Impossible. There are just soooo many combinations, it's simply impossible for there to be no more domain names left.

Remember, you can have up to 67 characters in a domain now. Plus you can use dashes. So, calculate that combination...

26 letters of the alphabet, plus 1 dash, plus 10 numbers = 37 different characters. 67 characters in a domain, so it would be 67 multiplied by itself 37 times, 67 to the 37th power.

= 3.6708589715158079306312158856962e+67

... I could be wrong, I'm no good at math.

... plus that's only assuming that only one domain extension existed.

Yeah looks imposible, but who wants http://www.gas3252esdfsd-xcvs910f.com or http://www.12345678oi.com or abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1234567890-
there are only so many good names left actually that might actually be kinda cool. all 37 in your name

You can have more than 1 dash, you know.... so, that should be 26 alphabet, plus 67/2 ('cause you can't start or end with a dash... is it possible to get a domain that goes http://www.i-----------p.com?), plus 10 numbers = 69.

So it should be 67 to the 69th power... (?)

I always get B's or C's on my math, so......

Anyway, the title of this thread is "What will Happen When There are No Domain Names Left?" What will happen? They'll get more extensions, they're getting some already now.

Well, I'm just saying that it's impossible for there to be no domain names left.

yes, example being http://www.f---edcompany.com/

all this math, I'm already confused. Lets just leave it at ... domain names will never run out, good domain names will :)

Simple economics 101 -- supply and demand -- the price will skyrocket until only a few can actually afford them and then they will fall again. But with ever changing technology, something better and cheaper will be around by then judging from the 'rithmatic being done here :)

Well no one is taking my apple.com.kg! It's the closest I'm gonna get to an apple computer! ;)

As long as their are creative people, there will be no end to domain names

the math of it is computations and permutations. so it would be 69 n! this is the way to put it in your calculator and it turns out to be a huge number. 68*67*66*65*64...*2*1

With more than 15 million .com domain names registered to date, that leaves more than 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 999999999999999999999999% (literally) of all possible .com domain names still available.

Not to mention that there are only 6 billion people in this world. If one person registered 2 domains, we'd still have a lot left.

'Course, in a few years (maybe a decade) the world population would definitely increase by another billion or so... then again, a lot of them are just kids.

And domain names aren't that hard to get if one is creative enough. I got mine recently (http://www.mrsgiggles.com - apparently no one thought of that one) from Namezero (BIG BIG BIG mistake, now they bagged up the net and org ones as well as mrgiggles.com and mrgiggles.net).

http://www.himbo.org is still avaliable should I want to set up a gay/female-oriented porn site.

I don't think the .com domains are THAT difficult to find if one is creative enough.

I think sub-domains will become increasingly more popular-they are short, free, and easy to remember. Some are better than domain names. Maybe that will be a big business-the selling of sub-domains?

LeX

I don't think so. Personally, I'd prefer "myname.com" over "myname.someotherguyscompany.com" anytime...

Coolin

Would you prefer freewebspacesearchengine.net or freewebspace----------? Domain names are taken up more than subdomains, so subdomains are going to be more popular.

But it's so gay to get your company's address that goes "mydumbcomp.cjbredirectionservices.net"

I guess it just depends.

It's a shame that .co.cx was closed down. That was the best redirection service. Anyway, mydumbcomp.co.cx is much nicer than myreallysuperdumbstupidcomp.com (mydumbcomp.com is taken.) See my point?

But its even gayer to have a business in the 21 century that doesnt have a website at all. if you promote enough and have a good enough site, but the domain name you want is gone then i dont think subdomains are a problem.

ace0
March 2nd, 2001, 19:27
yeah-who's going to offer them--------- has most of the good words used up already. I wish some of the short domains would offer them-more promotion for them, too.

LeX
March 2nd, 2001, 22:19
Well, let's just hope they'll start offering even more (useful) TLD's in the future, like ".web" etc...

Like I said, it just depends.
