I got a free .com NameZero domain back in June 2000.
In Dec 2000 I recieved an offer to upgrade to NameZero Plus (hide Nav-Bar and get domain registered to me). Mailed $19.95 money-order (yes they are accepted)1st week of January & noticed within 2 weeks that I can now hide the Nav-Bar.
Domain is still registered to NameZero- 7 weeks later.
I like my domain name but noticed that they registered the .net and .org variations in Sept 2000 - so I can't even register a .net extension & clear out.
I can't get a reply to my emails.
Anybody successfully got a domain transfer from NameZero?

I realised the error of my ways and managed to register the .net version myself, so I haven't even paid attention to my NZ domain in a while. If they ever were to release it, then I would probably snap it up, but I'm not too concerned about it in the meantime.

Reply from NameZero:
Dear Doug,
Thank you for enquiring about the status of your listing in the Who-Is directory. We have just removed a technical roadblock related to a third-party provider. The remaining steps have been assigned our highest internal priority. As soon as the process has been completely tested, we will begin processing the list of people who have upgraded to
our Plus service. Your domain name will be in the first batch processed. We will send you an email confirming the listing of your name in the Who-Is directory as soon as it is complete.
We recognize your frustration and sincerely apologize for this delay. We want to assure you that our engineering resources are working hard to finalize the technical issues.
Thank you again for your patience and we hope to contact you soon with a confirmation email.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Best Regards,
The Namezero Team

Loada dung...
Man, these guys at Namezero are smart! First, they offer you free domains, then after less than a year they suddenly stop their free services and offer you a "limited time special" to upgrade - in other words, pay them money. Most people would like to keep their domain(s), so they're willing to pay, and Namezero gains profit, they don't lose anything.
BRILLIANT!

Some quick estimations...
Let's say Namezero got each domain for about 10 bucks. Let's see...
2,000,000 members times $10 = $20,000,000 (out)
About half upgrades via their limited time offer of $19.95
1,000,000 times $20 = 20,000,000 (in)
So now, most of their debts are paid.
The rest of the ppl goes for the 24.95 "special offer".
1,000,000 times $25 = 25,000,000 (in)
So that's how much they're profiting from doing this. Wow.
