View Full Version : What are you ppl looking for in a Web Host?
Clawz.com
February 28th, 2001, 19:44
Ok, I'm starting up my Clawz.com, fully redesigned and rescripted.
I need help now, what features are you people looking for in a host?
The Banner thing is a must, can't do anything about it, not unless I go out of business.
Coolin
February 28th, 2001, 20:34
We understand that you must have banners. But please do not make them popups, as they are annoying and closed before anyone ever looks at them. Therefore, making advertising ineffective. Try using user-placable banners, not only is this advertising not as annoying, it makes you get more signups as user-placable banners are almost as good as no banners at all.
Many people in these forums would love to see FTP access because it is probably the most effective method of uploading files. SSI or PHP would be a nice feature as many sites nowadays use includes so they could manage the site better. CGI is also something that can be offered if your server can handle it. PHP/MySQL is a last consideration, although many people want it, the above features are more commonly asked for.
And finally, please don't offer very little space or bandwidth. About 15 megs of space or more should suffice for most sites. You could also offer a program in which you could start off with 10 megs of space and "upgrade" to more space when needed.
Just my two cents :)

February 28th, 2001, 20:39
and preferably domianhosting with subdomain access!!!!
Clawz.com
February 28th, 2001, 20:44
Don't worry, the banner ain't a popup, it gets annoying
mine is a banner at the bottom of every page, adds it automatically
yea, my gives the user Full FTP Access to their Home Directory
I support PHP, SSI and CGI
mySQL, will do soon, but I still need to learn how to implement it.
Mine offers Unlimited Traffic and Unlimited Web Space.
Clawz.com
February 28th, 2001, 20:46
Mine support Subdomain and Domain hosting with no charges, except if u want to remove the banner I put on every page.
Both of em have a online admin page, so u can sign up to 3 subdomains under clawz.com and unlimited subdomains if u use ur domain.
right now, all ip routing, subdomain and domain hosting has unlimited email forwarding in em.
Canuckkev
February 28th, 2001, 22:13
Don't offer any "Unlimited" space/bandwidth . You'll get screwed with people storing downloads and such on it. But the banners at the bottom is a good idea. And that would work for some frames too, cause without scrolling on in the frame, it wouldn't mess up the frame, and the main frame will still have a banner.
Clawz.com
February 28th, 2001, 23:28
About the people abusing the unlimited space stuff, my web hosting is based on a general account, like a one time registration to access the services.
and me and fellow helpers of Clawz.com review all the applications to see if all the information is legit, if it isn't legit, their account will just get denied.
Some the people that will try to abuse it will get discouraged from the 1st step registration.
hopefully...
km
February 28th, 2001, 23:48
hopefully, there won't be any additional text ads/ads bar like virtualave/hypermart around the banner. just a clean banner only would be nice.

Clawz- Allow emu sites. Its hard to find a good emu site host these days.
Clawz.com
March 1st, 2001, 00:08
emu sites? what u mean by that?
the banners are just a 468*60 banner with a little text underneath, nothing more

March 1st, 2001, 00:28
one question. why do you require so much personal information, and how do you verify it? you mention name adress phone number, and "other important stuff". whats this other important stuff? Just a question.
I really like your site. looks cool and is easy to read. and it sounds friendly.
I also like the fact that it is out of vancouver, Canada.
Good luck to you.
Clawz.com
March 1st, 2001, 00:38
I require those information so that I know the people that I let in to use the services aren't going to abuse it, hopefully.
There's a online admin part of the user verfication, so it's easy for me and some other friends to verify user accounts.
Only reason why I put this in, is to try to stop as many ppl that will abuse my service.
So if you don't put in all the information that I request or correct, expect a deny mail from me. =)
Gayowulf
March 1st, 2001, 00:46
I like that idea. I think it will work. will that mean the sign up will take a couple hours to be processed? its not a big deal, but if it will take time mention it on your site. that way people will not think something is wrong when they cant acess it right away
Clawz.com
March 1st, 2001, 00:50
On the top of the Sign Up it says that All Applications must be review by the Administrations.
Plus, I'm doing some finishing touches on the Domain Hosting Service.

What sort of connection are you runing off? if its not real fast the unlimited bandwidth could be a problem.
Limited traffic is that hits or bandwidth?

Connection speed right now, Cable Modem

or if you dont want to host my domain right now....tell me how to use the Public DNS Service (GraniteCanyon)...PLEASE!!!!!
Clawz.com
March 1st, 2001, 10:55
If your going to host the sites on ur computer, than u can use GraniteCanyon, but it's a b*tch to setup. It requires some stuff that my DNS doesn't require, so I get confused, but I got it working at least.
I will host ur domain, as soon as I get a better advertisier.

Clawz.com~
I looks as if you're on your way to hosting a great service.
A couple things I'd like to suggest: a member forum at the very least & a member directory is always nice. A quick list of allowable file types will aid prospective members.
G'luck & have fun!

Hmm...outta Vancouver? Definite sign up. I sorta have two sites I need a host for though. Do you allow multiple sign ups?
Clawz.com
March 1st, 2001, 18:29
The Forum, I can put up within a week or so, just like the old Clawz.com
but what do u mean by members directory?
Clawz.com
March 1st, 2001, 18:31
Oh yea, the allowable files, I'll put in the FAQ later on when I have time to finish up the admin stuff.
yea, I allow multiple signup
u just have to sign up for the main login to gain access to the services
then u can add 2 subdomains or get a domain and get unlimited subdomain hosting
Canuckkev
March 1st, 2001, 18:33
K thanks. I just read the faqs and found it out that way. I like your authorization method. Hopefully it will allow only serious people to sign up, then your ads will be displayed more, and the service will last.

Hey Clawz.com~
I'm sure you've seen these, I may not be using the correct term. A directory w/links to hosted sites, some examples:
http://wzpro.net/hosted.html
http://pages.yahoo.com/
http://index.www1.50megs.com/index.html
When you're checking out hosts, don't you like to surf some of the sites in the community?? The old Geocities neighborhood, surfin' up & down the blocks is what got me interested in site building...and of course, it's where I started.
Later~

Clawz.com
March 1st, 2001, 19:46
Well, there's a problem with that.
some people don't want their site listed, but I can add a feature that says if u want to or not
but for me, site listing is pretty useless
but site searching, that could be better

Something for all you users with Clawz.com right now or planning to sign up.
http://www.clawz.com/ has the general sign up, this sign up is to gain access to the services.
When you account has been approved; there's a list of Services at http://www.clawz.com/, bottom left corner, Domain Hosting, Subdomain Hosting, IP Routing.
You can sign up for those services when your General Account has been approved.
Subdomain Hosting, only requires u to type in a Subdomain and Password and the optional Email Forwarding stuff. When your done that sign up, it will print out the useful information. So u better copy those useful information somewhere.
Oh yea.
the General Account doesn't have FTP Access!!!
And only when you sign up for the Subdomain Hosting service and wait around an hour, then you can use your account to get into the ftp.
And the login for your subdomain to Clawz.com ftp server is:
(subdomain).clawz.com
(subdomain) = the subdomain that you picked/typed in the Subdomain field.
This is all written out on the last page of the Subdomain Sign Up, so please don't be lazy and read the information carefully!!!
Canuckkev
March 3rd, 2001, 16:33
Well if you feel the need to post this here, obliviously it is not clearly stated on your site. I had a little trouble figuring it all out. Also, could you accept other domains, like .com.kg? It won't be trouble at all, but your current sign up does not allow this. And one last thing I noticed at the domain sign up page, for mail server, you exaple said "sitemal.everyone.net", I believe it should be "sitemail.everyone.net" .
Clawz.com
March 3rd, 2001, 16:42
It's more like some people don't take the time to read. I was checking my FTP logs, and 3 users tried to use the General Account to login.
And on the email it says that you can now add the service of ur choice, I didn't mention anything about FTP.
But I'll try to explain it even future later on, too busy with fixing other bugs.
fixed that typo and added .com.kg
if ppl want me to add a different domain ending, they just have to ask and I'll add it.
because I don't know home many domain endings there are.
Clawz.com
March 3rd, 2001, 16:54
To: DF LW
your email, dflws@xcsar.net doesn't allow email relaying and this is the first error that popped up with in around 20 users right now.
But your account is made.
Satelk
March 3rd, 2001, 18:37
You should add the endings of free domains, like:
net.kg
org.kg
mil.kg
gov.kg
uni.cc
wox.org
dhs.org
da.ru
I don't know if .xxx.ru or .mu are still free, but you could add them.
Clawz.com
March 3rd, 2001, 19:27
Well, right now I don't know how accurate your list is.
becuz dhs.org isn't a domain providing place
Satelk
March 3rd, 2001, 20:11
I know it's not domains, but subdomains that you can host like a domain. Some people might prefer this to subdomain hosting, because they can change the mail servers, have subdomains, etc.
The subdomain providers in my list are:
dhs.org
wox.org
uni.cc
da.ru
I still think you should add them though.
Clawz.com
March 3rd, 2001, 20:16
nah, I'll add the domain endings when they email me.
Clawz.com
March 3rd, 2001, 23:00
Ok, I bet little people will use this, but oh well.
When you sign for for any Subdomain or Domain Hosting, you get a POP3 account
Login would be the FTP Login you use.
Ex: http://www.clawz.com is my FTP Login
And for the Domain part, you can use your Domain if you signed up for a domain and set the Mail to "localhost"
Ex: clawz.com would be my domain
So, the full email would be...
http://www.clawz.com@clawz.com
yea, I know, it sux, but you can always use Email Forwarding.
webmaster@clawz.com to http://www.clawz.com@clawz.com
POP3/SMTP Server: your domain if I'm hosting it and if Mail is set to "localhost" or use the following..
mail.clawz.com
clawz.com

Well, right now I'm trying to fix the problem.
And when that SOHO package is released, I will get it.
But the problem would be, how will I be able to afford it?
My question would be, would some of you users on Clawz.com pay for the services? Like just help support Clawz.com or something, of course, ppl that do will get something back.

Well, it'll take around 24 hours for Clawz.com and the other stuff to get back up.
But I need to wait 2 days to see if my IP is dyanmic or not.
Right now, the banner I use is a P.O.S.
10 cent per click and only tracks 1 click per ip for every 24 hours.
Clawz.com
March 5th, 2001, 18:55
Ok, right now Clawz.com is working.
But for all your Domain Hosting users, you have to change the Primary DNS (Name Server) to:

24.76.82.181
But 2morrow will be the day to see if I'm screwed or not.

We do not list free hosts which cheat/abuse your ISP or someone elses ISP or abuse any other company/service. I would advice people not to use such a service for very obvious reasons.
I don't really wish to have discussions about this type of activity on this forum. Even though the intention might be good...

That's what surprised me... Wasn't sure I had read it right, at first. Usually everyone here jumps all over people like that. :)

That will take me some time to setup. I don't even know how to use it.

I say wait a while before offering major, complicated things like that. or see how many people would be interested. Its nice to know that someone will want to use it when you offer it

Thread closed for reasons mentioned above. My suggestion is to take this discussion to this service own forum. Any discussion of this service is welcome back whenever this service is no longer abusing the rules of it's ISP. Similar discussions will not be allowed in the future.
