View Full Version : This is scary...

Well, today I received an e-mail from my old e-mail account (looked like one of those virus e-mails that have nothing in it but are 150 KB large). That account had been inactive and unusable (you can't even login) for 9 months already. How is this possible? It just scares me to think about it... :nervous:

Could someone explain to me how such an effect can be done? Thanks! :)

Obviously someone from way back then still has you in his/her address book. That person has the virus (most likely Klez) and it puts your email address in the from field.

I am constantly getting mail returned to me as undelivered, it contains that virus, so a few people must have the virus (probably spammers because I don't have a lot of friends that use my hotmail address).

Huh? That's strange...Why would it get sent from my own account?

It doesn't, but the virus that that person has puts people from the address book in the from field to send it out again through OE

I got what I'm assuming is a virus today. It isn't serious, just annoying. as soon as I signed into MSN, like immediately, one of my friends was online and I got about 30 messages right away, all smilies. so I closed the window, opened a new one to talk to him. He was unaware of all of this

If all the smilie messages appeared like they came from him, that means he has the virus, it is just a variant of another MSN virus.

Ahh tabarnak...I remember this virus, I had it. It's generally harmless but it can crash your computer(smileys are evil!). I don't remember the name of this...I remember it's in the startup config in your msconfig utility.

Thats it! Choke...now I remember. You'll have to go to Start>Run>msconfig>Startup and then you have to uncheck Choke.

hey, but doesn't hotmail has a in-built virus detector called "McFee Antivirus"?

I am worried now also because I had received several large-sized blank email to my hotmail account.

So, does it mean that I automatically get my computer infected once I open the email?

Jan

No, because it is all in code, it only works if you execute it, and as there is no link to open it, it is safe. Just be worried if you get the same in an email at OE, then you might be in trouble

It doesn't work.

One of my mates sent me a picture, it claimed to be infected with a virus and wouldn't let me download it. All i had to do was re-fresh the page and then i could download it. It wasn't even infected!!!!

Oh yes it does, I use it often when I know there is a virus attachment, just to identify which one, but these latest ones are embedded so there is nothing to click on for Macafee to check.

It's best to have an antivirus program installed on ur PC. Try the sharewares at http://www.pandaantivirus.com.

Sound advice Ederic, but I think the majority of us do have an AV program installed and hopefully all update it it at least weekly. :classic2:

thanks, everyone, for your advice and help. I can't express my gratitude enough:)

It is such a relief to know that as long as I don't open the file, no evil virus will get into my computer.

oh, just to tell everyone a news, my father told me the other day that he read that someone is developing a virus that's embedded within a picture file.

I guess that would really scary:confused2

I'm sorry to reply to an old thread, but just recently I've noticed the same thing. Emails with large attachments are being sent to my email address, FROM my email address, and other email addresses....someone said it may be klez. She said an anti-virus program won't detect it. How can I tell if I have it, and if I do, how can I get rid of it?

Daniel

I caught klez many times with McAfee. Just update your .dat files.
