www.phpbb.com
Easiest to install, but a nightmare to customize

www.invisionboard.com
I've heard that the installation is OK, and customization is fair (but not a nightmare)

I've heard that the installation is OK, and customization is fair (but not a nightmare) It's opposite. PHPBB2 is easiest to install and customise, while IBF is very difficult to customise.

No... unless you just mean changing colors. Any forum that makes you edit all the template files on your own computer and then upload those files can't be called easy to customize... I far prefer to be able to edit the templates online like with OpenBB and see the effect of the change instantly. Having to upload the file before you can see for sure what you've done is a major annoyance.

Thats why you set up Apache/PHP/MySQL locally, it is really easy.

It's also probably because I have my own server running too, but I find it easier to have the template files, that way I can just open them up in whatever editor I want.

Editing files via ACP is far too troublesome. I prefer using Wordpad for editing.
