A few days ago, I was offered a position as co-manager in a new internet company. The company isn't up and running yet, and very much in the planning stages. The idea is quite a good one, and has a pretty good chance at being quite successful in my opinion. However, it is still a risk and it's going to involve moving from Brisbane to Sydney in less than six months, and I only know like one person down there that I could stay with. So I'd be pretty much by myself except for this person, who isn't even family.
Also, in the beginning I'd be living on around $700/fortnight. Which, I'm told, is quite good for a 17-year-old. The guy who offered the position to me has promised that my income will grow as the company does. My job would be to design and maintain some (if not all) sections of the site, attend and conduct business meetings, organise advertisers and so on.

If I don't take the job, I'm guessing I will end up as a receptionist in my own city, saving up to travel.
What would you do? Take the risk? :confused2

I'm just confused as I don't know if I want to leave my home right away, and I guess it might be kind of embarassing to have to come home like a few months later because it failed!!

That's a huge move and committment to make for something that *might* happen. I would wait until the business was up and running before committing yourself.

If I don't take it now, I don't get it, basically...

I don't know, I'm tempted so much... I'm just wary. I was considering going down there for a while, as a temporary working holiday kind of thing, if it sucks or I get bad vibes, I could quit. Maybe?

Most people who have became succesful, became that way through taking risks. It is a part of life. If you do not take this opportunity, and the company suceeds (sp?) then you will be thinking of all these what if's? On the other hand if the company fails, what have you lost, the cost of a plane/train/bus ticket to Sydney and back, and probably a few months away from your family. I would say take the risk and go with it, cause who knows, the company might end up a HUGE success, it may not, but would you rather fail by taking a risk, or if the company suceeds think what if?

I agree with Moonman. If yuo can afford to take a few months off from waht you are doing now, then take the risk and try it. I got made redundant in January, and can't find another job because of the IT job market in the UK being so cr*p at the moment, especially around my area. So in March my wife and I set up a small web design and software development company. It's not making money yet, but hopefully it will soon. It's cost us a lot of money so far, and i've possibly missed uot on a good job while i've been working on the business, but I'm hoping soon it'll be worth it. But then again it may fold in a few months, who knows, but without taking that risk, i'd have never have had the chance to find out.....

If it's difficult to find jobs in your area right now, I would go ahead and take it so long as relocating to a new city doesn't break your wallet..

I would go ahead and take it since it sounds like a pretty good job. I've done it many times: moving to a new city for a promising job opportunity. If you aren't happy with the job, you can always quit. Don't be worried about being embarassed if it fails, and if it does, you'll still learn something important by taking chances..

If it works out, you'll make tons of money.

If it doesn't, you'll have a good experience in the true nature of business

So go for it!

To be honest, it sounds a bit dodgy.

Is this all talk? It sounds like this is one of those, "Yeah, I'm gonna build the coolest website in the world and make millions of dollars from advertising".

If you get some proof that this actually has some potential, it could be something to consider; but just make sure that it's realistic.

You could always go there and look around for another job straight away, so that if it falls through, you could have something else to keep you going; which could be fun.

Also keep in mind that it is rare that one becomes sucessful overnight.

It's good to think positively about these things, but I'm a pessimist, and I don't think it's a good idea.

I don't know, just seems like you'd be putting all your eggs in one basket. This "company" has no reputation, no guaranteed signs that it will succeed, you can only really go on claims they make to you. If you can afford to go there, and if possible, go back, then I say give it a try. But to me, it just doesn't seem logical.

I think I could probably afford it without much hassle. I have an ex who lives there who I could stay with...

I don't know, I want to take the risk, I'm just not sure. It sounds like the majority here think I should! Maybe I'll do what you said, Toefur, and try taking on a completely different job straight away to fall back on.
