Which one would you buy? Reasonable for your money and value?
I'm thinking about buying a 95 dodge neon :) hopefully within 2 months!

If I had enough money, I would buy anything that's not American.

neons are ok, and so are sunfires.
More affordable reliable and economical, though, are little japanese cars.
It really depends on your budget and what style of car you want.

Well, I really don't know what kinds of cars (at what prices) you guys have up there...
I could get a '98 Mustang GT for $6,995
'94 Chevy Beretta for $1,750
'91 Ford Bronco for $800
Hell, as long as it has 4 tires, at least a couple of doors, you're good to go.
Like Gayo said, it really just depends on what you want.

I'm thinking of getting a Eclipse. Not the very old version of it but not the newest kind either. Maybe a '96 or something. I'm trying to get it around $4000 USD.
Anyone seen any around that price range?

Well, since my 89 Park Avenue died, and my 85 impala is going to die, I think I am going to be getting a Toyota pickup. Those are great vehicles, not exactly cars, but great anyway.

You ever check out http://autotrader.com? Maybe you should.

There's probably others as well.

cool why are cars so cheap in the US.
In singapore a new japanese car costs around US$40000~50000

We're not talkin' new cars here. New cars are much more expensive.
$60,000 for a 2003 Navigator...

Hello Trent, we're talking realistic cars here. I'm sure we'd all love a brand new Jap import :p
But crappy American domestics, at least 10 years old is the only thing in our price ranges. At least for me, cause my parents don't pay for my car or college, so I go cheap :D
Gayowulf
July 14th, 2002, 01:09
why not a 10 year old japanese import?
Thats what my flamewagon is. its an 84 tercel with 300 000+ Km on it and all ive had to replace was the brakes.
Trenz. Japanese cars are so cheap here becasue many of them are not imported. They have factories in the USA.
syd. look in the classified in the Sun or the Province. (are they still on strike?)
or pick up an autotrader booklet, and tell us what there is that fits in your price range and we will help you decide :)

Around US $20000 for a used car.
I hate the biggish look of an American car.

My max budget is $5000Cdn
I actually bought an autotrader and the buy and sell. I get the Province tomorrow (Sun is evil) so I'll check it out.
So far I'm looking at this:
1995 Dodge Neon (around $4-5,000 Cdn)
1989 Pontiac Tempest (around $1500-2000, but I'm not sure cause they're all so cheap. WHY? Cause I dont know anything 'bout cars)
Any other model suggestions?
No standards, no soft-tops, nothing BIG (I drive an 83 firebird right now and that is tooo big).
Gayowulf
July 14th, 2002, 01:23
lol. thats a coincidence. One of my friends drives an 83 fireboat. those things look like a ----- to park.
That neon seems pretty cheap to me. I wonder if it has been in an accident or has had some mechanical trouble in the past. Check the milage too.
The tempest is really cheap becasue its old and probably bagged on.
Check out www.canadatrader.com
I got a few hundred results in the vancouver area between 1000 and 5000 and between 1980 and 1999.

83' Firebird??! BIG? I drive a 97' Firebird, it's teeny-tiny! I'm only like 6'1", though...

You know syd, you should look at like a Daytona or something. A '93 or something, those ones are automatic. Probably get a decent one for 6 grand and thos ethings can fly.
Personally, my tank is holding in there. I have a giant hole in th egrill that I just haven't replaced from the time I was parked at work and some jackass backed out into it, and took off without me knowing. A couple of cracks in the windshield here and there (I live in Alberta, it's a way of life), and there's a little bit of rust on the side, but with a bit of cash, I could turn it into a really sweet ride.

But a '82 Firebird doesn't cost much though, but of course small is better.
My mom drives a Subaru Impreza and can squeeze through some damn lorrys.

A lorry is a truck... I think 'lorry' is mainly a Brittish thing though, cos we called em trucks here.

trenz, used Jap cars are US$20,000 there in Singapore? They're around $7,000 here in Thailand.
Since you guys buy really old cars, does that mean American cars are really good since they can last really long? Most cars here are Japanese and when they're 10 years and older, they don't work too well anymore. :o

I bought a brand new korean car for $16,000 CAD. Closest thing to a japanese car.
$16,000 = $18,089.47 SGD
My mom has the new Toyota Matrix for $21,000 CAD or something.

I could never see a reason for buying a brand new car.
I mean, you get a model that's only a year or two older, still new, for 50% less than what you'd be paying for a brand new model.

As of now I have a 1998 Honda Civic.
My parents are in the process of purchasing me a Lexus IS300. That's my favorite car. I love that car.
If I don't get the Lexus, I'l settle for either a Mazda RX-7 ('92-'93) or a new Nissan Altima.

Kia? I don't think I'd trust a Kia. I'd take an older Accord, Camry, or Altima before that -- of course just my opinion.

And don't buy from a dealer.
Today I took our 4runner to the local Toyota dealer to ask how much they would buy it for.
its a 1991 model with ~178000km on it. Got it september 2001 for 9000CDN
the nice car salesman looked at it and said the dealership would give me 2000 for it, but 1500 into and and sell it on the lot for 6000.
Goes to show you how much more you pay for a car on the lot.

Only give you 2002 for a '91 4Runner?...That bites...
I sort of softened my position on American cars though...If you plan on having it for under 2 years, sure, go for it! But don't depend on your investment being worth something when it's done. With all the money you will have to put into the car to keep it on the road, it would be worth it to spend a bit more for a Japanese car.

I'd prefer a private owner too! Luckily my neighbour owns his own auto repair shop and knows basically EVERYTHING about cars, so he can check out any potential car.
