I presently use Windows98se and log onto the internet for considerable hours via a modem connection.
After I have been connected for 30+ hours the computer system begins to run slow. I think this is due to the continual usage of memory which the system cannot reclaim until it's re-booted.
Does any one know of a way to reclaim the memory without rebooting??
thanks
Craig

You use a dial up connection for 30 hours straight? Hopefully you aren't at the computer, staring at the screen for those 30 hours. Are you trying to run a server or just shedule a whole lotta downloads at one time? I can't really help unless I have a better idea why you have your comp running for so long.

Windows 9x has limited system resources. These resources slowly go down when your computer is on, even if you're doing nothing. There is a way to reclaim RAM from various memory utilities, but resources are impossible to reclaim. If you want to keep your computer on that long, try using Windows 2000/NT or Linux.

Thanks for your reply Canuckkev and Coolin.
I am using the net via dialup connection and no I am not there for 30 hours. I leave it on for mail and the occassional download. I am not running a server or anyting like that.
If I can avoide having to go to Linux or Nt at this stage I would prefer that.
thanks for any ideas.

Or BeOS (Free @ http://free.be.com/)
Or Mac OS X! ;)
The more people who buy macs, the cheaper they get, then I'll get me G4 cube! joy! :)

give it up Supermoo, your evil ploy to gain a G4 shall not be fulfilled.
After 30 hours online, a minute or two to reboot shouldn't be too much :). Or wait for WindowsXP, which should be able to stay up for a long time... i think, I actually don't know anything about XP :(

Try QNX...the 3rd best after linux and MAC OS X
requires just 16 MB with GUI and just 4 MB if you don't want gui.
