View Full Version : Anyone Know Of Someone Who Can Top This?

I currently have a Platinum package at www.featureprice.com. They're good and all but don't offer the bandwith I really want to host my site, www.betagamers.com (http://www.betagamers.com), and regularly cause downtime and then blame it on me -- so I guess they're really not good. I want to host game clients and such which will consume a larger amount of bandwith than anything else on my site. I know there's a few providers who offer "unlimited bandwith" but there's always cut off for the amount of whatever being utilized. I've seen www.l33thosting.com and www.leethosting.com who good but I don't know if they can top the poor quality I'm being offered at www.featureprice.com with bandwith. Of course none of the hosting companies will tell you what's going to suspend your site until it happens.
Anyway, does anybody know of some great deals ($500 per year and under please) that offer the full package in terms of code launguages offered, like PHP and CGI and have a ton of bandwith to use? Or does anybody know about dedicated server deals I could utilize?
I don't make any money off my site, and if anyone bought games through my affiliate program I would still make very little. I just need a high quality host which will fit into my budget.

I wouldn't go with an unlimited host.

I'd actually rather do that, but bandwith does cost a lot when you have to add on, and then add on! So you think I should go with a standard monthly bandwith allowance provider?
I wish I could just make a payable service for the downloads and reclaim bandwith cost that way, but until I start offering things other than beta files that isn't legal, plus it would be much easier with a server I have physical access to that way. :biggrin2:

Well... how much is a ton?? 5 GB?? 10 GB?? 20 GB?? 50 GB?? I really wish people would state what they want as we can't read your mind. To some, 5 GB would be a lot, others 50 GB would.
Why not get a RackShack ($99/month) server, and do what every other site does, sell the extra space and bandwidth. You'll only have to make about $50-55/month (since your willing to pay about $40/month).
I guess you host the actual games then?? Why not just link to them and let the developer cover the costs.

[Your site] is consuming "-tons-" of bandwidth? Good god, where has the internet gone. First thing you need to do is get off of Feature Price, they don't put up the amount of bandwidth you can consume.

That would be really good to do the elf, but my site just lists the games so the developers pay nothing. It's not a service, just a gaming site.
I don't know what I need for bandwith either because FeaturePrice keeps shutting me off before I can even get a rough estimate of what I need. Plus their amazing ability to withold information they have which would be real helpful to me, they suddenly seem to have no knowledge of when I ask them.
I'd actually be fine with a host that would give me a ton (whatever you want that amount to be) of webspace and bandwith just for holding larger 50 mb and up files.

Still, if you want the level of transfer you need, you'll have to get a dedicated server. You get 400 GB, so take 100 GB and sell the other 300 GB, you might even turn a profit ;) I've seen tons of "non" hosting sites offer hosting. There just selling what they don't plan on using to cut costs. You don't have to host only gaming site, register another domain for $15 and create a service site. Or get 3 friends and tell them "i'll give you each 10 GB space w/ 100 GB data transfer for $20/month", with they money from them plus what your willing to pay, it should work out :)

Well, the developer (in my view) should host the file. We don't need 100 copies of the same piece of software all over the place. Maybe a few registered mirrors everyone knows (such as sunsite etc) would be fine, but not every other joe.
Like I said above, your better off going with a dedicated server... 40/60 GB space & 400 GB transfer for $99/month.

Thanks for the suggestions the elf.
I think that's what I'm going to do. I might even be able to get my Dad's work to sign up for a site through me, which doesn't offer anything more then pictures and text so I should save bandwith there.
I know what you mean about having 100 mirrors for files. Usually for betas, there's a total lack of them and it really sucks having to try to download a 200mb file when there's about 2,000 other people doing the same thing, all from one FTP!
What I don't get is why a place like FilePlanet hosts 500k files on every server they've got though!

RackShack really sucks when you look at what they offer.
They have a many different server packages to choose from, yet only 3 choices are available. Each one costs $349 or more for setup fees. I contacted their sales department and asked if they had any others but he started saying that the monthly server cost was a setup fee and was an all around idiot. They're really strange, even lesser server packages, for example getting only a 20GB hard drive can still end up being $49 more than the same computer with a 40GB one.
I wish there was a good alternative to them, but they really have the market hold on cheap dedicated servers.

Nocster.com
Check out http://www.webhostingtalk.com and ask around there ;) There seems to be a whole sh*t load of RS, nocster and other dedicated resellers there lol. I'm sure they'll tell you where to look.
