Umm...it's not freeware. I think I have the disks lying around somewhere. I tried installing Tie Fighter on Windows 2000, but no luck. I have both X-Wing and Tie Fighter (but not X-Wing vs Tie Fighter). Actually, playing Tie Fighter was when I first heard about Star Wars (well, I heard about it, but had no idea what it was). And, It was a long time ago, but it seems like the "plot" in Tie Fighter is to be "revealed" in the final Star Wars movie.

Tie Fighter took place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi... the plot was simply a number of missions after Hoth and leading up to Endor. (As I recall, there are some missions relating to the construction of the 2nd death star.)

I think I played X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter briefly also (it wasn't as good as Tie Fighter), but never the original X-Wing.
