Are these so called banners those strips of ICQ features located at the top of your Contact list? If that's what you're talking about, then I've got 'em too, except it always says "NEW! ICQ SMS". But I think you can get rid of that by using ICQ+, you know, changing skins.

If that's not it, then I haven't gotten any at all.

Oh, f*ck it, I just checked ICQ today, and there were banners!!! Damn.... forget what I said about.

But I swear there weren't any there yesterday!

I think ICQ auto-updates it. Oh, I get it now......
See, this is what happened. Yesterday, I started ICQ with no other applications running, and I saw the modem thingy in the status bar (or toolbar, systembar - whatever) going wild, downloading something, but I didn't know what it was, and I got all freaked out thinking I got a virus or something, and I disconnected right away. Now that I've seen the banner, it explains everything.

And since I stopped the transfer of the banner mid-way, the banner was kinda messed up, I think it was supposed to be animated, but it gets stuck on one particular frame after a few frames.

So I'm guessing that ICQ grabs banners periodically or occasionaly. Bummers... :(

Funny, I haven't had one banner since signing up for ICQ! All I got was that stupid "New! SMS!" button that I don't know how to get rid of. Oh well, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. :p

Oh yes! I would also like to give my thanks to you for the link. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the second method working. Oh well, getting rid of the banner and having the space is better than having a banner. And the SMS thing is gone too!

BTW, I think this banner thing only affects ICQ 2000b, my 2000a neighbour hasn't gotten any banners yet. Anyone have an install file of 2000a handy?

You see the problem is that you can't use old versions of ICQ software anymore if you just installed it. Only existing users can use it. I tried using ICQ 98a and it didn't allow me to connect while trying to use my old UIN. I read the FAQ on ICQ.com and it said that old clients are not able to connect to the ICQ server to register (not only register a new UIN, but even trying to use your old number). Oh well, you can't help but try. And I'm downloading it right now.

Hey I found something that might be a use to you guys again ... I know a lot of you might have ICQ and AOL and many other IM programs ... well I found a REALLY! good mutli IM program. Check it out --> http://www.Imici.com It's kinda weird how it works .. ubt it does help especially when you have friends that have mutli acount with all types of IM programs.

Once Again good luck ... oh and Coolin your welcome for the link ... I don't use ICQ much anymore.. but I know i would so dislike the banners on the program.

See people always say new versions are better but anything with AOL is always better in the old version.

A fe examples:

Icq 99 No AOL no ads no thing
ICQ 2000 AOL banners, free stuff popups junk

Netscape 4 Ok
Netscape 6 more AOL bullc*rap

So they scrapped the entire Netscape code and started on a new code called Gecko. Since Netscape 5 was made, but unreleased :(, they called the new one Netscape 6 since Netscape 5 was already made.

If you see it from another point of view, they released Netscape 6 real late. They didn't want people thinking that a lower version number makes their browser inferior (IE was at 5.5 and moving on to 6.0 by the time NS 6 came out of the gates). So they upped the version number a little to remain competitive.

Mac ICQ (which incidentally is crap), LICQ (for Linux), as well as any 3rd party ICQ clients -- all don't have ads. I've never looked for Windows ones, since I run OS X and RedHat 6.2, but I'm sure they exist.

Netscape version jumped to 6 since at the time IE 5 had long since been released. If they released a version 5 it would have looked like they were still behind IE. [ Even though N6 is WAY behind IE and even N4.7x :) ]

ICQ goes ad ware and the next day you have dozens of people offering solutions to remove ads. Just shows that how popular ICQ is and what the net can do to change way people do things.
