Is EZboard the best, or do other places have better free message boards?

I find EzBoard to have way too many ads. When I used them, I found http://www.homepageforums.com to be the best. They only had one ad at an unobtrusive spot. I'm not sure what they have no though. Hopefully the same! :)

Well, I don't really care about ads, and I didn't really find the homepagetools forums that interesting-are there any other good ones?

http://www.forumco.com is an excellent one, but i don't think they're accepting any new free accounts while upgrading.

My favorite is the UltraBoard script hosted by http://www.revamp.net . It's powerful, and they don't display any ads at all to the users.

No ads? How do they survive? And if they go down (which they probably will) you'll be left without all your posts and members!

It's actually just a new version of a site that's been around for quite a while. It used to be mach.org, which I'd been using for about a year. Mach.org didn't have the UltraBoard script, though, it only had a wwwboard. There was 1 time about 10 months ago when there was a major problem and all the data was lost, and then another problem about 1 month ago when about a week of data was lost but there were backups restored so that no more than that was lost. The webmaster of mach.org seemed to hate his host, CWI hosting, which was at fault for the problems both times. In switching/upgrading everything to the new site as revamp.net, they switched to a new host, which presumably won't have problems like that. (Hasn't so far.)

Revamp.net isn't likely to disappear, though, since mach.org/revamp.net has been around since August of 1998.

As for how they survive... well, it does show ads to you when you're logging in to customize the scripts, so there's some revenue coming from that. Here's what the site has to say on the about us (http://www.revamp.net/aboutus.shtml) page:
This site is totally free with no advertisements for several reasons. First, I hate those stupid banner ads; they make my site look bad. Second, we can still almost break even without them. Lastly, I'm just a nice guy.

With advertising on the internet these days on an all-time low... I'm not sure if they will last with the ads only on the members area.

If you're looking for a free message board service, HomePageTools is definitely the best. I really think ezBoard is horrible. Here's a great list I've compiled:

(Please do not complain about the bad layout; I'm not done with the site yet. :))

If you have a CGI-Bin, use iKonboard, you can download it for free. It is also fully customizable. :) You could check it out on my site, because I have it.

http://deeplist.com Click on "Message Board" :D

Ikonboard is what you get when you take lots of features and throw them all together in a big pile of mess. Seriously, the default setup is confusing, despite all the features. It's better than YaBB, but not by much.

Let me guess, Conky, this nine month old thread was on the front page too?

Actually, I went to search and typed in "message boards", as I'm an expert in that category. LOL! Sorry, I didn't realize it was 9 months old. :D

I know how to develop bits and pieces of a message board, but I'm saying I'm an expert at knowing all the different services there are. :)

Then which (BB) do you think has the most features?

conkermaniac
December 14th, 2001, 03:57
None of them...I like complaining about all of them. :D

I really recommend Aimoo, as it is hosted, plus it's coming out with even more features very soon! At least they attempt to make the layout look a little different.
