AMD Athlon XP line is quite good(and cheap). Although they do tend to get a little hot.
AMD, I find, are a lot better for movie editing, and stuff like that.
Intel processors are quite good for gaming, and servers.

In response to the thread title:
Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz
Of course I wouldn't throw down 7 Franklins for a processor, but it is arguably the best currently available.
On a more reasonable level, P4's have an edge on Athlon XPs right now because of their overclockability (is that even a word? ). AXPs are still good bang for the buck though.

Depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend ;)

It will be soon. And it can be better than the other processors.

Actually, Itaniums have been out for quite some time... Itanium 2 will be released soon.
Now let's have a quick looky at some prices:
Current Itaniums: $1500-$5000+
Itanium 2: $2000-$6500+
I might also add that these prices are just for the cpu; no other hardware is included in those prices.
For the home user? I think not.

I don't think Xeon is for home users either.

In what way is the Itanium better?
Bruce

Itaniums have more cache, really, that's about the only difference... except for the fact that they're 64 bit. Itaniums have 3MB cache, while P4 (Northwoods) have 512k and Athlon XPs have 256k.

I read somewhere where someone had a "Limited Eddition" P3 with 1mb cache.

Yep, they're are indeed PIII Xeons with 1MB cache.
They're on sale at Computers4Sure for $1695.95.

Itanium 1 & 2 are impressive in specs, but are useless if you don't have software or at least a a variety of software to run on it...

I wonder, where does Kyle get all the money for those systems? :biggrin2:

That was my second guess.
Bah, I think I'll start a review site and uhhhh...get free computers. :biggrin2:
