View Full Version : Screen resolution?

I'm making a website, and I'm just wondering what would be the most common screen resolution to design it to? Otherwise, I might just design it for 800x600 screens. (surely 640x480's small?) Thanks!

I suggest that you design/produce it on 1024x768 but test it on 800x600 as well.

I'd say have a minimum size for 800X600 resolution. 800X600 and 1024X768 are the most common. Here are some stats from my site:
Unknown
(2%)
640x480
(2%)
800x600
(40%)
1024x768
(42%)
1152x864
(3%)
1280x1024
(8%)
1600x1200
(0%)
So, I'd say make it so it doesn't look that bad at high resoulutions, but make sure 800X600 and 1024X768 look the best.

damn! I'm 0%!!!
lol
Anyways, make your pages work for 800*600. Don't even bother checking on higher res's, if it looks good on 800*600 (and you center all of it), it looks good on 1600*1200.

Here are some stats for thecounter.com

I argree with Cheap Bastard, but look at it in 640x480 and see just how bad it is and try to fix it up a bit.

Thanks! It looks like it's 800x600. My screen's actually 1024x768, so it shouldn't be a problem. And all the stats were interesting too.

i look at it in 640*480, and i yell ''So that's why they invented horizontal scrollbars!''

And i change to 1024x768 and realize why glasses were invented.

I was thinking maybe you could use a * or percentage for the width of your 2nd column. Then it would expand for all resolutions. But I dunno if it works. I did this myself, but your table might be created differently.

yeah make it flexible.
Nothing worse than a site where you have to keep scrolling down and down when 3/4 of your screen is unused.
horizontal scrolling sucks

i used to agree, but then i grew up and realized i'm not alone. Even if you still make it for 640*480, on 1280*1024 (the first one not with 0%) it's only half of the screen...
Only the 'elite' (well, almost only) uses high resolutions. And usually those people understand the work it takes to make it look good.
Besides, if you have anything of a machine (if you can get up that high, you should...), it's sooooo easy to switch down if it really annoys you that much.

ok, ultimately it depends on what you are doing with it, but this forum is better for putting as much info on the screen as it can fit rather than being fixed width. plus it's designed to fit in smaller screens without horizontal scrolling.

I use 1600*1200 but my site is designed for 800*600.
