Hello,
I was wonder which one is a better free host to use to have a free forum. PHPBB is a great board but when put at f2s.com it can be a real pain because the server is slow a lot of time and sometimes it does not even connect to the database. The FREE board at http://forum.snitz.com is also a good board but it uses ASP and therefore brinkster.com is a good free host for that. But I don't know which is better when you consider the reliablity/performance/and speed. What is your opinon on this.

at F2S, you get 5MB for your MySQL DB, which can fill up quickly.
At Brinkster, you get 30MB for your DB, which should be enough

Brinkster also has this bandwidth limit of 300mb per month. That's definately not enough for a message board. I would suggest a CGI board on a F2S instead.

How do you calculate bandwidth? You said that brinkster.com offers 100 MB/month, what is that in terms of hits per month?...and what kind of calculation do you use to arrive at that number. I have always heard about bandwidth but still not clear on the exact concept.

It is used incorrectly. What they mean is transfer, not bandwidth, nor hits.
Transfer is the simply the amount of data transfered from your site to your visitors. Rough calculation:
You have a one page site. Add up the page, plus the KB's of the images and multiply that times the amount of visitors you get.
Why this is hard to 'precalculate':
Often, you have *more* than a one page site. People don't visit every page, nor do they let every page load, nor do they visit the same pages.
Hits and bandwidth are other things.
