like many companies that ask for ssn, what if i don't give them?

but I can still register on their site.

If you are in USA, you have to provide it if you wish to be paid. No SSN = no cheque :classic2:

Some companies just want your TaxID. But don't be so anal about giving your ssn to companies, their not going to do anything with it(except make you pay taxes).

what exactly is a SSN? im not in america so wouldnt know. why dont people like giving it away?
