Hi,

I was wanting to make a website, but I need a graphics program to make half decent graphics. I live in Canada, and the only program that I found at my local store was Flash 5 for Mac. I do not want to use the internet, because of someone that might steal your credit card. I do not have a credit card, nor do I plan to get one. What would be the best way to get a graphics program from a local computer store. Which ones are the best? Thanks for your help,

Jeff

Jeff Umm, you're posting this in the wrong forum.

There are a number of programs that can help you.

Photoshop
Fireworks
Paint Shop Pro

Although, all of these cost lots of money.

PSP doesn't cost "lots of money". You can pick it up for < $50.

No, PSP is cheap. It's good too. I haven't used any graphic program extensively, but it seems like it can do pretty much everything you would need for web graphics.

my friend has the gimp and illegal version of photoshop, and he prefers the gimp - try www.gimp.org

You can always ask your local store to order in a program, I am sure?

Paintshop pro is a great program at a reasonable cost, you can download a trial version to try it out first and there are many PSP communities where you get help if you need it and many online tutorials.

The jasc site also lists retail stores where it is available, with three in Canada. http://www.jasc.com/home_use.asp?

I've used the trial version of Fireworks and it has the worst interface for a program I have ever used. BTW, most Macromedia programs are shocking.

There is also a light edition of Photoshop for about 99 bucks.

I use Paint Shop Pro 6 and MS Image Composer for my editing, I find that with Paint Shop Pro it is hard to use certain functions like enlarging images etc.

Practically all the computer stores here sell PS and PSP.

I have a "copied" version of Photoshop on win32 and GIMP on Linux. I like the gimp, which is what I used to resize my avatar and touch it up (it was originally 400x300 and pixel-ly ). I like photoshop because of it's ease of use, but the GIMP because it's free. In the GIMP, most functions are performed through right-click, which took me a while to get used to, but Photoshop is good if you want a layout on the level of spoono.com or cscentral.com [I think CSCentral used 3dsMax as well; I [i]know spoono did]

I use the GIMP on Linux and have also used PSP on Windows, but prefer the GIMP on Linux. There is versions of the GIMP for both playforms, also you should be aware that PSP needs quite a bit of RAM and better Graphic card. You can also search for these and others using Google.com with seaarch terms graphics programs+downloads, photo editors+downloads, or even programz.

I think you are getting confused with photoshop here? I use PSP a lot and I have only 64Mb RAM :confused2 No idea what my graphics card is, but it wouldn't be anything spectacular.

Photoshop wouldn't run too well on that computer, I imagine.

Photoshop barely runs on this old 400mhz celeron with 64mb of SDRAM and an ancient STB Velocity 128 graphics card. My good computer (950mhz athlon/256mb SDRAM/nVidia TNT2 M64 32MB) runs it flawlessly, as well as CS (OpenGL 640x480) and GTA3.

I run it at OpenGL 1600*1200 flawlessly.

I prefer to do things the LEGAL way. That way you'll have a much better chance of not getting put in jail.

I am not really an artist, and do not need a high-end graphics program. I tried Macromedia Fireworks 4 as a trial, and it was easy to use, but too powerful. Is Paint Shop Pro easy to use, and not too powerful? I am only building graphics with a background, text, color, and some simple effects. Can PSP offer me this?

It should be able to do that for you. In Paint Shop Pro 6 which is what I use, it comes with a clone tool to allow you to place images on a background or what ever, and you just use a paint brush thing to put the picture in.

I think it will be hard for the Gov't to put millions of people behind bars for pirating software.

Well, if you have a windows you could try http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/ they have older version of their pay software and don't charge anything for the minimal product. You do have to register but they don't ask for a credit card so you may like that. As for mac I use a few graphics editors but none of them are free and they are all macromedia products.
