I was wondering on what are some of the people comments on the various free forums available?

phpBB2, IBF (invision board forum), YaBB ?

Is one particularity faster than the other. YaBB seems to be a little slower on their test demo site than IBF, and phpBB seems to be the quickest from my simple just browsing around, but i guess alot of that depends on the current load on the sever. What about current modules available.. largest support community. phpBB seems to win their, but i like the feel and admin features of IBF. Haven't give YaBB a test drive yet.

And as far as vBulliten or UBB threads.. I think they are great. I got to test UBB 6.x and it was amazing. Lighting fast.. seemed to load faster than straight html pages if that is possible. But i currently don't have 160-300 bucks to shell out for forums software when some free forums are starting to come close to the same quality.

So Anyone have any thoughts on these forums? Or another forum that is comparable?

I reccomend phpBB I use it as far as free forums go I think it is much easier to set up and I find it very easy to customize.

True, nice and fast too. However IBF seems to be gaining some popularity and their has to be a reason for that. IBF is much more richly features, but that has go to definetly slow down their board some.

IBF have more features, the drawback is the forum is hard to customize.

I am planning on having a meduim sized community and i want to minamize the load on the server. What is your honest opinion.. should i really give vB a cosideration. It seem aweful quick here. But phpBB is pretty darn fast too.. and free. Maybe i should just wait and see how much traffic picks up. If the community really starts to grow, upgrade to vB. Basically is vB worth the extra money over a forum like phpBB or IBF

Plus i really like the idea of vB portal, but i don't know how effecient it is though.. will have to look into it.

InvisionBoard for you, or perhaps MyBBoard. The final version of MyBBoard looks promising!

I really do like Invision board... but wouldn't be a little slower and run more queues becaue of the extra features?

Hmm i really do like the looks and feel of MyBBoard. Reminds me of UBB.threads in a way. I think i might give it a test drive. However, kind of looks like a small support community which means less hacks and add ons. Not looking to hack it to death, just so simple add on's like a gender addtion. Probably could write that one myself, but i am not all that good with php/mysql

Also how is it on sucking up system resource when compared with IBF or the hatefull phpBB?

The sql queries are optimised, so for 1.01 there were about 9 queries, now for v1.1 [to be released] it's 12, but if they are optimised it has a better performance.

MyBBoard has definite potential. Is MyBB going to be a free forum when it is released? and does anyone have an idea when that will be. They look really nice

Used to be XMB before the break, now they've potential. Been following them for quite a while, now everythings quiet. They're relatively unknown, and they're still in the early stages. But they're promising.
