Hi all, wondering if anyone could help me here, I'm having some trouble on my Windows 98 machine, the system specs are below, anyways, Whenever I change the slightest setting that affects registery(changing volume, setting display mode, installing new drivers), after 1-3 reboots, I get a registery error, which windows fixes by installing a backup copy of the registery deleting all my changes and killing the config part of any software I've installed. I've formatted my HD and installed windows 98 from sratch and still getting the same problem everytime I change something, please help.

System Specs:
Home Built
Chipset: Forgot
CPU: AMD k-2 233Mhz /w 3DNow
Memory: 96megs SDRAM
OS: Windows 98

Maybe it's hardware problems?

thats the only thing I can think of, I'm thinking I may switch the CPU from a AMD k6 2 to a Pentuim MMX 166, I just don't want to go from a 233 to 166 ::sniff::

I'd much rather get a new computer but I got no money...

If Windows 98 doesn't work... Have you tried other versions of Windows or perhaps even Linux? (It's free, so money wouldn't be a problem with that.)

It happens to me all the time to. The only thing i can suggest is when you get a registry problem press Ctrl + Alt + Del and close it. It doesnt change anything and your programs will be fine, Thats what i do.

It's a completely different OS, originally created by the one and only Linus Torvalds, based on Minix, with a command prompt only by default, but you can get a GUI (most distributions of linux, or prepackaged versions, come with a GUI (graphical environment). Linux is more stable, more reliable, and overall better than Windows in the server field, but windows is used more on the desktops because, well, windows is easier to use. Another thing is "Linux" is just the Kernel (the "brain") and a few utilities (Like BASH, the Bourne Again Shell, based on the Bourne Shell for UNIX. The shell is a command interpreter which takes what you type and turns it into commands that the kernel understands). The rest of the programs are from the GNU project and a few other places.

Some links to various places:
gnu.org
slashdot.org
linuxnewbie.org
linux.org
linux.com

There is no "official" site, since Linux isn't technically "owned" by anyone, it's open souce (the source-code is freely available to anyone, and you can edit it as much as you like). The copyright is owned by Linus Torvalds (lee-nus, not lie-nus) so if you call something "Linux", it had better be Linux.

On a side note, the original pronounciation is Lee-nucks but the generally accepted term is Lin-ucks. The penguin is also the mascot for Linux because Linus likes penguins a lot (I heard this side note from TechTV when he was on The Screen Savers for an interview).

That's the 3-fingered salute. The "magic button" is the off switch ;). Fixes any problems with Windows.

lol, never mind

the magic button, 3-fingered salute, what ever you want to call it didn't work, I used my comp for awhile, but after I rebooted, it reloaded an old registry.

Well it do't work for me, I can close the dialoge box withut rebooting but latter when I want to reboot it reloads my registry, I have started making copies of my registry to reload them after it clears them, that don't help much though...
