View Full Version : CD RW drive can't open

While playing the Return to Castle Wolfenstein game, I realised that the CD RW drive could not open but the main CD-Rom drive could. Which means when I try to eject the CD-RW drive it gives me an orange light, but everything functions. When I restart it turns fine, but after a while I can't use it again. Can someone help? I checked the system configuration in the control panel and it is working properly.

When I restart the pc, a faint light can be observed. But then it seems to shut down, could it be the fault of a short circuit or something? It has disappeared completely and now DirectCD says there's no CD-RW drive.

Definitely power. Try switching the plug to another wallsocket or getting a more powerful powersupply (I have a 350w powersupply running a USB CDRW, DVD-ROM drive, and a CDROM drive just fine).

From the system config it's: IDE CD-R/RW. It's not the first time I experienced this, the first time was before the hard disk error.

If you have this problem, it is quite easy to fix.
On the face of the drive there should be a small hole. You put a pin into it and the drive pop's open.

my DVD rom (creative) drive's hole doesn't take a pin. Paperclip more like.
open out the edge of a paperclip and send it through the hole and use it as a handle and pull the drive out.
Might work if you don't have a hole for a pin.

It's not the CD-Rom drive, but the CD RW drive and it doesn't have one, I think cos if you eject the drive while burning a cd it's not too good just for safety precautions. Well, back to square one now!
