I heard a lot of crazy things when someone tried to switch to another registrar. So, if it is a domain, which probably no one other wants, would it be better to let the domain expire and register one day after the expiration with another registrar? Or does it take days or maybe weeks till the domain is "really" free, so it can be registered at another registrar?

I've never heard any crazy things happening (though I'm sure there have been problems), and depending on where you register it, it might *never* get thrown back into the pool. Never might be too strong of a word, but there are domains that have expired long long long ago, which haven't been put back in.

Transfer it.

I read these weired things about *.de-domains. Did anyone had bad experiences with alldns, when he transfered a domain? I am unsatisfied with their support, they never answere my mail and the lack of en encrypted interface. It doesn't matter for me, if the domain is $8 or $12.75

I don't know to which registrar I would like to switch, maybe gandi.net. What do I have to do to switch? Do I have to contact alldns? Is it possible that the new registrar does everything for me? Can I do everything via internet or do I have to send a fax? I want to be sure, that nothing goes wrong. It is a domain for private mail only, so 1 day down would be ok, but longer would be a big problem.
