I mean can the default settings be not to save messages in sent items?

You can uncheck it before you send :)


Automatically parse URLs: automatically adds and around internet addresses.
Show Signature: include your profile signature. Only registered users may have signatures.
Save a copy: Also save a copy in the 'Sent Items' folder.
Request Read Receipt: Allows you to check whether your message has been read by the recipient.
Some of us need to keep sent messages for future reference ;)

I wish they'd use a cookie to remember your preferences as it is done in OPtions when you post...

You only have to decide how you want this once and unless you change it, it stays.
