I use notepad and had a go at using CoffeeCup HTML Editor.

What HTML editor would you recommend anyone??

Allaire Homesite if you don't like WYSIWYG editors. But Dreamweaver MX code viewer/editor is also great. Notepad have that 50k limits on file size.

I tried CoffeeCup once, it was good. Depends on what you want though. If you have used notepad, I assume you don't need a program that will pop up a little box to edit all the atrributes of the tags, so a simple program with syntax highlighting should do you.

Notepad have that 50k limits on file size.I think that limit only applies to Windows 98 and below. NT 4 had a limit, but it was well over 50k. XP Pro doesn't seem to, but 3mb was the largest file I had on hand to test it with, so it might have one, just bigger than that.

I can somewhat see your point if you're talking about using Notepad as a programming or scripting editor, but for just making HTML documents, I wouldn't expect the 50k filesize limit-- assuming it applies to you-- to be a problem. If your webpages are that large, I think it may be time to redesign.

I use both EditPlus 2 and TextPad. EditPlus 2 is a little better, though.

Combination of MetaPad, 1st Page 2000 and Mozilla/Netscape (Gecko only) composer is what I use generally. Zoobie: URL?

I only use wysiwyg editors. Dreamweaver MX is too expensive, and takes too long to download on my comp.

As of now, i use Netscape Composer. It's allright. 1st Page 2000 is ---- if you don't know html. It isn't easy to use. Your best bet is to get a fast connection or a ton of $$$ and go get Dreamweaver, or stick with Coffee Cup.

I like notepad, simply because it's simple and easy to use!

I started off by using NotePad and FrontPage, but when i started using Dreamweaver 4 about 3 months ago, I've never touched any other HTML programs. DWMX is good too, but it's too expensive for me. So I would say DW4 is good too.

But then it crashes when it opens big files.

CuteHTML was pretty good but never really used it. :p

For PHP or any other coding stuff, use EditPlus 2! It does everything. ;)

i use editpad. it has tabbed files (that is, it opens new files in tabs in the obe window, though you can set it to open mulitple instances of the program). i like it because you can search and replace across all the files you have open at the time, and it doesn't seem to have a limit on file size or file numbers open.

yes, like notepad you need knowledge of html, but c'mon, html is not to learn. pffft.

I started my website from scratch and with very little knowledge using notepad and I am still using it now. Never encountered any problems. However, I am tempted to switch my files to Microsoft Word, in case I hit some limits using the basic and primitive notepad...:o

I am using NetObjects for normal websites and WebObjects when I need to do heavy programmation.

NetObjects let me see the entire web site from a tree structure point of view.

WebObjects let me create a complex interaction between users and a database.

WYSIWYG----Dreamweaver MX (although FrontPage 2002 is ok, not as powerful)
Other than that, for hand-coding, I used CoffeeCup and I will start to again when I see a cracked version on KazaaLite :-D

I'd say FrontPage for anyone who's sort of familiar with Microsoft. It's like using Word, so easy to do. Then again it doesn't support all the newer server side languages that Dreamweaver does.

Windows: Notepad, DOS edit
*nix: vi (;)), mcedit

I've used dreamweaver 3 before (no i didnt pay for it, but i didnt download it either) and didnt really like it too much. Too slow, might as well use a much faster app like DOS EDIT :p

I like either 1st page - not too bad for a free editor, but usually do my own coding in notepad.... As for newbies at web design, there's heaps of sites out there that show you how to write HTML etc, which is how I learnt myself... if I were to recommend a site to learn from or to refer to www.htmlclinic.com would have to be it... I love the colour picker page there, makes it so easy to find the codes for most colours that you'd use

I think DWMX is the best... I'm saving up my cash to buy Studio MX... then I can get started with some serious coding.
