well if you get a domain name, its a shorter URL and once your site gets popular, then many people want to own the domain so i guess you're like the king ;)

If you don't have a site, then errrr... well, what is the point? You could use it for email of course, but a domain by itself without purpose is pointless. I don't think there's argument on that.

Using the domain name for e-mail entitled you to have cool userID :)
I know LOTS OF PEOPLE (anime fans) who will die just to have my e-mail address!

thats like saying whats the point in having a stamp collection if you are not going to mail any letters.
A good domain name can have value, and I believe a good .com even though they have taken a massive drop in value, could over time appreciate, especially if you build traffic around it.

Indeed :) I know of a couple of people that sell .coms that they snapped up a year or so ago and they offer them for sale anywhere between $100 and $1000....and won't sell them for less. If you stumble on a good one, hang on to it if you don't use it yourself

Of course, but he's asking if you just register it. Just the domain could increase in value, however not many have quit their day jobs and sell domains full time. The investment poitential is questionable, however so is anything else, so why not.
I don't really understand what the thread starter's real question is. what they want to know exactly...

i think it can kind of be likened to stamp collecting, or baseball card collecting or hobbies like that, which involve collecting stuff.
Dont ask me why, some people just get a buzz out of registering domain names.
Personally I only register domain names that I plan on using, and hopefully one of these days I will get around to developing sites for most of them.
