My site is currently hosted on acidmist, but they recently changed their quota from 500 MB to 50 MB. My site currently take up over 180 MB of webspace, so 50 MB is not nearly enough.

I'm not looking for those crappy hosts like NBCi or Fortunecity. I tried gcsnet.net, but their servers are down a lot!

I need features like SSI and Perl. My site gets around 1000 visitors per day, so if the host has requirements I think my can meet them.

And no I'm not using the webspace for warez, I hvae tons of images, wallpapers, GIFs, etc. on thousands of pages.

Well, since you don't like Nbci, your only other options are:

http://home.crosswinds.net/

http://www.stas.net/

http://www.spree.com/ - if your files are all < 500 kb

Hmmm.... no thanks. But thanks anyway!

I guess I'll stick with gcsnet.net for now.

Try http://www.atomichosting.net.

They offer:
Unlimited Space & Transfer
NO ADS
CGI, SSI, PHP & MySQL soon
And much more..
YOu can use your own http://www.com domain if you contact the owner and if not..you get http://www.atomichosting.net/~yourname...but, if you talk to jeremy (atomics owner)..you could probally get yourname.atomichosting.net! :o) Well..so long! :o)

Atomic isnt exactly a host that could support even a medium size site. If you're pulling more then 15mb a day then I would NOT use them.

Atomic is a new Host..but its getting better. IT recently had some trouble with its isp and now its back on a 56k modem..but before summer..it should be colocated on a T1, T2, or a T3 line.

Don't you think that atomichosting sound too good to be true??
Unlimited space? No ads?? CGI, PHP, MySQL???
I'm sorry... how is a host like this supposed to survive?

Atomichosting's run by a batch of kids. That's how.

I tried them out - seems very slow at uploading and downloading was about 6kb/s

Kind of like geocities

run by kids

is that a big deal?

I don't think so
as long as they're providing a stable service like atomichosting
I wouldn't care if they are kids or not

I care that it takes half an hour to load a page.

AtomicHosting is going to be getting at least a T1 line soon..! :o) Yes..its VERY slow right now..but hey..ITS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE..but IT IS TRUE! :o)...Those webhosting companies talking like: " WE WILL GIVE YOU 500MB for 30$ month..well..THATS HIGH!!! I can get a 60GB drive for less than 100$USD And CGI, SSI, FTP, and all that is FREE..so unless the server's owner is too lazy to install it..it should be there. ANYONE Who wants to offer hosting can get CGI, SSI, Apache, an FTPd, a Mailer daemon..and everything else required to run a hosting service for free...So why should you have to pay for anything but the webspace & connection? More and More FREE hosting companies are starting to offer unlim space..and there is NO reason any server should now offer PHP, PERL, MySQL, and SSI support..!

Yes, you can get a cheap 5,000 RPM drive for this, but do you honestly think *this* is the drive that you'd want in a server? And what kind of statement is this? Is this all your $30/mo buys? Have we left out dependable, quality servers (all the harware that goes into one)? Have we forgotten about the connection, the equipment to connect the server, support, etc., etc., etc.???

I could go on.

Apparently you are not aware of the 'costs' involved in offering these free options. It isn't only about the cost of these items. Web hosting is more than a HD magically connected to a pipe, so you should assume you'd have to pay for more than just 'the webspace & connection'.

Unlimited space, eh? I can't go on... someone please continue without me.

I seriously doubt atomichosting can get a T1 without any revenue.

And because its run by kids, they could decide its no fun anymore, and pull out, or go all crappy. It seems average speed to me because I cant download faster that 3 k/s.

Seems dead to me right now. :(

Wasn't spunge.org (or was is sponge.org?) hosted on a 33.6k modem at one point in time?

Baggio

http://www.spunge.org is still hosted on a 33.6k modem, from http://www.spunge.org/whatis.html :

There are few restrictions here really. Here are the major ones:
Nothing that will use up too much bandwidth
Since the internet connection is only a 33.6 modem I
do have to be concerned with bandwidth. There just
really isn't much of it, and it is often in use

Replying to myself..according to http://www.spunge.org/info.html, spunge.org is connected to the net via a 56KFlex V.90 modem. This means spunge can download at 56K, but can only upload to you at 33.6K.

Geeze, I have a test server running off my @home account (not a website, just used for script dev. and showing stuff to friends etc.) and I would never consider setting up a host on it much less a 33.6!!! :P

shinomori, have you considered hosting your 180mb site across sevral hosts that offer less space? This would probably work OK if you need free space.
