Nov. 29, this coming friday, is Buy Nothing Day. It's the day for all us first world piggies to give it a rest.

How you celebrate this day is up to you... as long as it doesn't involve consuming.

I, along with a group of other people plastered the amll with posters, and will be putting chalk to sidewalk tomorrow night, whith the grand finale being to drape a BND2k banner over the entrance to the mall.

The university radio station aired this bit today as well:

The average North American consumes five times more than a Mexican, ten times more than a Chinese person, and thirty times more than a person from India.

(Burp!)

We are the most voracious consumers in the world... a world that could die because of the way we North Americans live.

Give it a rest!
November 29th is Buy Nothing Day.

It's a good concept, but just a pity that the majority of people don't even care and laugh at things like this.

Well, I support the cause either way, but it's especially easy for me cause I'm currently broke.

Why is it so dumb not to buy anything? I think this is sooo dumb. We were born to buy and eat.

Ummmmm perhaps because of the reasons posted in the first post? Because:

The average North American consumes five times more than a Mexican, ten times more than a Chinese person, and thirty times more than a person from India.

And perhaps because it's true? Why do you think hundreds of thousands of youth fast for 30 hours every year? Because millions of people endure worse! That's why. If we endure even a little of what other people do, it will encourage us and others to give and help the people who can't help themselves. There isn't a direct monetary help thru this program, but with others such as 30HF, there is direct monetary help to people who desperately need it. For those who don't know, 30HF is a time when youth all over the nation fast for 30 hrs once a year to raise money for world hunger (in particular, IIRC, African hunger) and then ship all the money off to World Vision which distributes the food to the people who need it more than we do.
That's why...

Would buying a few 4 litre jugs of milk and seeing if anyone can drink it all within an hour be allowed? It's not really "consumption" if we don't keep it down, is it?

Wouldn't it be better if the world was communist?
