Anyone else try the IE6 public preview? It renders much faster than IE5... Supports P3P privacy control... Full CSS1 support...
Clearly the best browser there is...

Internet Explorer 6 rendering faster than IE 5.x? I find that IE 3 rendered much faster than IE 4 which rendered much faster than IE 5. Is it just me?

Finally. I was hoping they would release some sort of upgrade to IE 5.5 soon. 5.5 is all messed up and only shows half the images. Hope this one works good! I'm sure it will have lots of bugs, but that is to be expected with micro----.

I'm using it now. Seems goo so far. I like how you hover over an image and it gives you the option to save it, ad to favorites, etc. **** those lame no-right click scripts. They custom bar thing is a waste of space though.
Canuckkev
March 26th, 2001, 23:30
Yeah I tried it. Worked fine but for some reason it has stoped. Back to the good ol O5.0 . The personal bar was pretty useless. The media player is okay, but could be a lot better, as in, able to edit playlists and what not. Besides from that it's the exact same(as far as I can tell). Okay the image saving thing is a bit different, but that's it. But, the best part is no annoying "Application Error" every time you close it, like the early release of 5.5!

it seems ok, but when i eventually find something i dont like about it and uninstall it, will my old system still be there? will i still have ie5 + settings??
LeX
March 27th, 2001, 01:35
Well, past experiences with uninstalling Micro---- softwares has told me that the whole "uninstall" thing is just simply ****ed up... who knows, maybe you will, maybe you won't. Don't trust them too much...
I don't think you'll still have your ol' IE5 settings, I believe it would get overwritten. I'm not sure, you don't have to take my word for it.
I'm gonna try IE6 out now.

I'm downloading right now, and I'm seeing the install file being downloaded from conxion.com??

Conxion.com bought out Microsoft, so that would be the reason the download why would be from there. (Well, that'd be the most logical explanation, wouldn't it? ;))
After seeing how bad the Netscape 6 preview was (not that the eventual release was all that great either), I think I'll wait until IE 6 is slightly better debugged.
It's interesting how their IE 6 download page (here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/preview/ie6/betanote.asp)) says it was last updated March 18, 1999. I don't recall any Internet Explorer 6 beta releases in 1999. ;)

Maybe they've had the beta 6 since 1999. We just didn't know about it.

Windows XP Beta 2 is just $9.95. Think I should download it? I think ill try IE6, MS seems to be looking more towards stability and speed now that linux is starting to come into competition. We'll have to see what comes up.

For only $10, I think WinXP is a steal, even though it's still beta. Think about it, where else would you get Windows for only $10 legally?

Actually programs that Microsoft are putting out for $9.99 are beta and free. What you are paying for is the cd and shipping. They have always done this. So in essence, pirated versions really arent pirated.

Getting back on track...
IE6 seems cool enough for now. They've finally packed in the fault collection thing that Netscape has had with the 4th generation browsers.
What do you guys think about the image auto-resize feature? Is it a nice implement or a complete waste of time?

IE6 is LAME!!! It crashed after 10 minutes of use. All I did was click on a link here in the forums and oh-geez IE6 can't handle it.:mad::mad:
Still, I'm not gonna uninstall IE6, 'cause 5.5 is just as bad.

March 28th, 2001, 21:47
Well... The fault collection may be a nice feature, but the error mesage is sorta... umm... gay.
"Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvienience."

I heard jokes about Microsoft making new terms for the word "crash" or "illegal operation," and now they have done it!

Your computer SUCKS! IE6 is the best yet of the bunch. It's the only one that DIDN'T crash within the first hour of use and HASN'T crashed yet :D. IE5.5 would turn all the little black arrows into 6's and make all the fonts 3x as large and default face when I opened to many ie windows. Haven't had a single IE6 problem yet :).
Finally, a decent installment of IE :)*joy*:)

IE6 has yet to crash for me, for the first few days though whenever i tried to play a MPG, the built in Media Player gave me a invalid file type error, and now those exact same MPG's run fine in IE6... hmmm.

Yes, my pooter does suck. So does Win98. Maybe that's the system that can't handle the pop-up window, not my pooter.
Yeah, IE6 is overall cool, hasn't crashed since the last time, and have yet to see any errors. :) Suppose it's because it's based on a WinXP/NT core or wutever crap was written on the IE6 page.

Even if your computer "sucks," it's Microsoft's job to make sure it does work. And it hasn't. But it's still beta, we have to wait for the final to make judgements.

Sure, but when Netscape originally started, all they made was browsers as well, right? And they didn't implement any ads...
Wutever, Opera's not as feature rich as IE5+ (for now), so I'll be sticking with IE6 for a while.

The only thing I miss in Opera that is in IE is autocomplete. Besides that(and maybe CSS scrollbars), Opera is a lot better than IE. Right now I am using a little prog called NetCaptor, which uses the IE engine, but has tabs like Opera. Mostly I just use it because my regular IE doesn't show all the pictures on a page, but fro some reason NetCaptor works fine. It has some more extra features as well, and it's not ad-ware, it's freeware.

I don't like how in Opera everything's all cluttered and you can't really customize it as you can with IE.
http://www.dto.f2s.com/Duhh/fws.jpg
See how much space I saved for the actual content?
IE has always loaded all the images that can be loaded for me.

April 8th, 2001, 12:05
Yeah, it won't load iframes either. I have it selected in the options so it does, but...
Anyways, if you use a higher resolution than 800X600, there is still a lot of content area with Opera. It isn't very customizable though. This is because that ad must be shown, so they don't want people to cover it up with tool bars.

Any smart person would turn off the toolbar and use the keyboard shortcuts, not only do they save more room, they are faster as well. I would also turn off the bar that shows all the active windows. Then you get even more space than that little picture LeX got.
BTW, LeX, how did you get that cool customization on your OS?

Oh, that... hehe, I used this proggy called TClock. Pretty nice, you can do lots of stuff you've always wanted to do with your toolbar with this baby.
