What kind of server is gcsnet.net on. I know that they don`t host themselves but somebody is hosting them so who is it.

I think they are on a Cobalt RaQ. They have dedicated server and it' are hosted at terrabyte.
server specs
RAM 128 MB
Hard Disk 9.2 GB
Cobalt OS 5.0

won't be able to host that many people

Well, they are a bit choosy with their users (pages with 200+ hits only), so sign-ups will last for a while.

They also have a "Basic" plan though, where you get http://www.gcsnet.net/you . Don't know all the specs, but they allow any site for that(well, hits dont matter).

Yes, I am aware of the basic plan, but I still stand by my guess. The reason why people want to host with GCSNet is because of the features. The basic plan takes out practically all of the features, giving you bare bones hosting that you could get with many other providers such as Tripod or 50megs.

Thats all? shecks I thought I server would have great more stuff, also would my computer with the following work as a server? 256RAM 20GB 733 MHz? so would it?

Just about any computer would work as a server. But if you want to run a really good one, you need 2 Pentium-class processors and at least 256 MB RAM with at least a T1 connection.

You would also need a RAID hard drive system if you plan to get big. I'd start out with a 30 gb drive MINIMUM.

Yeah you can place your perl scripts anywhere, they're not limited to the cgi-bin.

What about chmoding?

They are using unix servers, so yes, you have to CHMOD.

yeah and my computer could be a server too (oh yeah it is)

No, you misread my post. I'm not asking "what about chmoding?" I'm saying, "what about "chmoding"?", as in "what about it?"

Understand? :p

When i try accessing to http://www.gcsnet.net, it points to http://www.paradigmec.com.

And oh, LeX, you said to wait at least 2 weeks before the .com.kg domain transfers over...just when there was 2 more days at least...gcsnet goes down...

Yeah, I know... :( bummer. They were great.

Wonder what happened, though? They didn't seem to be having any finacial problems..

Oh, well, back to F2S then.

Running a server myself, on a pii-300 64megs RAM, 6.4GB disk (30megs for website), Win98, cable. Works fine, since I don't have any users. If you want to test what the computer can hadle goto: http://213.118.48.129 If you want to see phpBB (yes, I also have PHP and MySQL running) got to: http://213.118.48.129/phpBB

How can that be? I can still access it. It can be a firewall at the host side. Hum.

If you have a firewall you will need to allow access to port 80!
