Mass chicken escape
December 05, 2002

ABOUT 5,000 chickens escaped onto the streets of an outer Melbourne suburb today after the truck carrying them hit a tree and overturned.

Police said the truck overturned on the Monbulk-Seville Road, Monbulk, about 4.30am (AEDT).

Many of the chickens, which were on their way to market, had been killed in the crash, police said.

The driver of the truck escaped with minor injuries. The road was closed and was expected to reopen about 8am.

Town under chicken attack
December 04, 2002

KATHA Sheehan relies on a three-year-old rooster named Young Warrior as a lure to capture other feisty cocks fowling the main streets and back alleys of Key West, Florida.

Ray Horwitz carries a cage and baits it with food, sometimes spending hours waiting to snare his quarry, only to see them strut away at the last moment.

The pair are among a handful of freelance 'chicken consultants' helping Key West in its battle against thousands of free-roaming hens and roosters, considered a nuisance by many people in this vacation hub.

"I hate the chickens. I think we should be able to kill them," Horwitz said.

"If we don't stop them, they are going to multiply. They wreak havoc and they keep you awake."

More than a year after Key West launched a roundup to relocate birds that roam the streets by day and roost in trees and shrubs at night, the city is still struggling to rein in its rooster population.

A city ordinance bars the public from killing the fowl, so more than a thousand have been rounded up.

Over here a truck carrying cows overturned a while ago.......cows were running all over the highway. Took em from about 5:30 A.M. to 12 noon to get everything straight.

I were driving and saw cows all over the freeway, I'd probably think I had been driving too long and was hallucinating. I've driven across the country (U.S.) a few times and have been at the "seeing cows on the freeway" point before...

If you were talking about the cows, they were on their way to the slaughterhouse to be turned into steak anyways.

Are you referring to the chooks or the cattle? If it is the cattle, I doubt the people who raised them would want to kill them/have them killed, after all they were possibly on their way to sale yards. It takes a lot of time and money to get them to a saleable/edible age.
