Hm, all right, hello people.
To introduce myself, I'm just a young kid, who doesn't know anything 'bout computers, HTML or the web. Sure, I like to surf around, but that's all. Well, and then suddenly sometime ago the thought of creating an own website came into my mind.
Anyway, so now I wanted to ask you,
where I can get a great FREE server, which offers
1. a short subdomain (yet that ain't that important)
2. at least 50MB (I've got lots of images, mp3 s and on, you see)
3. and please any kind of adds, but NO pop-ups!
I've been doing with freeservers for sometime, but finally I found out that was obviously quite a big mistake. Most important is it's quick to upload, no matter how nice the subdomains are. Zu viel verlangt? I do hope not, just tell me your opinion, all I want is
quick-loading,
free webspace,
with -if possible- a nice subdomain.
Ok, after everyone seemed to be able to follow me...
Bye, and please do help me.

Why don't you try f2s? http://www.f2s.com they are GOOD! But only have 20 megs,hum.
Well, since you don't mind ads,look at http://www.freewebspace.net/cgi-bin/db2/db.cgi?sb=1&so=ascend&view_records=1&Language=English&Location=---&FTP=FTP&Space=%3E20&Adtype=---&Subdomain=Subdomain&mh=99

F2s don't allow zips or mp3z.

March 28th, 2001, 20:08
I don't think any webspace providers out there allow mp3s, 'cause most mp3s people upload are illegal.
Oh, yeah, if you want a redirect subdomain, you can get one at http://www---------- for free with no ads. That way, you can find a host that doesn't have subdomains but still have a subdomain that points to your actual site anyway.

You may want to try http://www.worldzone.net which provides 100 megs of free webspace along with ads on the botton of your page. They are also very fast. The unfortunate part is that they give you a long URL. This is easily solved by using a redirection service such as http://www----------

nbci has 100MB (some say more). It seems that they allow mp3's, as long as they arent illegal.

Have you tried the serach already? Well, 50megs is pretty good, AND they have short URL (you.50megs.com). Been there for a while, until i figured out there where no-ad hosts.
If you want to see a page on 50megs: http://prog-home.50megs.com (one of my old sites).They also have some nice scripts, there is also some sort of SSI.

If Nbci has only 100 MB, then why is my site there up to 135 MB? I've also found the site http://www.unclebubby.com/ mirrored there, and it's using 700 MB! So Nbci is definitely not limited space! Those who say so think that Nbci is just a rich, greedy corporation. They may be right about that, but I don't care if it means they're going to be fast and will never have to subject websurfers to mulitple pop-ups on their error 404 pages (like Spaceports does).

It's not spaceports fault if their users are slackers who can't even keep all their links in check... :)
Also. I reccommend http://www.netfirms.com even tho they havbe only 25 meg.

True, but sometimes an error 404 comes as a result of a temporary server timeout, which is outside of the webmaster's control. For example, during the past two weeks at Nbci, sometimes clicking on a members' site's link would turn up a Nbci error 404 page after waiting a long time to access the file. Then, if you go back and click on it again, the right page or file would appear. This has happened a few times to my site in the past few weeks, even though Nbci hasn't lost any of my files (thank goodness my site uses frames, so that people won't think they've purposely gone into Nbci's site and have left mine). So you see, Spaceports should reduce the number of pop-ups on their error 404 pages to just one behind pop-up at most, since it's not always the fault of the webmaster or websurfer if the page turns up. I've also found out that Crosswinds does this too; just check out my now deceased Crosswinds URL, http://www.crosswinds.net/~cyberryan/ , if you dare.

As a free webhost, I am using geocities. I think they are the best free hosting service currently online.
Will you disagree?
(Expected answer: NO) :)
Good Luck!

I'd prefer Nbci's adframe to Geocities' browser crashing (or so I've heard) ad square.

I actually think geocities are pretty good for image storing and then linking in forum signatures.
Really can't think why anyone would want to use them to host their webpage unless it is just a download center.. Their adds are UGLY
Toefur
March 29th, 2001, 18:40
Geocities seems to be a tad bit slow these days. Or is that just me?
Anyway. I just had the misfortune of trying to go to a few sites on spaceports that didn't exist... yes, they SHOULD do something about their 404 page.lol.
LeX
March 29th, 2001, 19:45
Crosswinds is soooooo... they don't support PHP, but they're using it for their own site!
BTW, I noticed that they've finally changed designs.
About those 404 pages... see now, these guys know how to make money. So you can't blame them for being a smartass. ;)

Hm, thanks so far, sorry I didn't check out earlier...
At the moment I'm thinking about fortunecity, yet that's quite confusing, 'cause I've forgotten my password and they just won't mail it to me.
Ok, thank you really very, very much, I'll try out everything.

That was years ago. They first upgraded to 11MB and now it's at 15MB.

Obviously I was wanting to much... Ok, you can find some subdomains at http://www.v3.com... welcome.to/my site yet there's quite a fat banner at the bottom.
Ok, so now, as I think I'm just to critical about everything and wanting to much... Now I "only" need as much as free webspace, which's gotta be quick -you know, as I can get with nice banners... Now I really wonder if I shouldn't use Geocities (!), that's got the smallest banners.
And what's this stuff about bigstep.com? Do they really give you free webspace without ads? I don't know... I didn't join that, because it sounded too weird...
Thanks,
Monalisa

Stay away from bigstep! You can only use THEIR templates!
Also free webspace without ads is available: F2S. They are good:
* 20megs
* PHP
* CGI
* MySQL
* PostGreSQL(or something like that)
* short URL (www.you.f2s.com)
* NO ADS
If you don't believe me, goto http://www.prog-home.f2s.com

Geocities are faster than they used to be - about 25kb/s from them now.

So. if I'm right... f2s seems to be good because it doesn't have any ads - on the other hand it's got only 11megs and doesn't allow winzip and mp3 s. And then there's something called worldzone which's got the banners at the bottom. That's nice.
But I still don't know what to do, I mean, well... It's really difficult to dicide which to choose.
Anyway, thank you~

They have 20 megs. I know it doesn't matter mutch for you, but they have also PHP,CGI and MySQL. Can come in handy if you want a phpBB (best forum ever ;))

They also have SSI, very handy if you need the same text on every page.

This can also be accomplished with PHP by using
<?php include ("../location/of/file.html"); ?>

yeah, in terms of features, f2s is great. Altho the newer servers aren't as good as the old ones I hear. If only they would give a bit more space...
LeX
April 2nd, 2001, 08:45
What? 20MB isn't enough for you?
Hehe, actually, it's not really sufficient for me either, if I upload some big---- files, etc... which I might when I "settle down". I'm homeless right now. :(

Yep, same here. Got this prob with some bigger gaming accessory files, won't fit on one account. Thats y I'm still on the lookout and ready to move to a new host that gives space and supports the stuff I need.
Might hv to end up using nbci to store things one day...

I... just wonder again where I can find my beloved subdomains. -------- seems to be really nice, especially because of its no-ads, but actually, I prefer .com-domains. (Yeah, I'm a very queer person.)
Thanks,

I've got a page hosted on GeoCities. It's not too bad, I just use it because what I used it for wasn't important enough to go on my good space :)
You can easily replace the AdSquare with a GeoGuide...they're not that much of an obstruction if they're on the bottom of the page.

nbci , formerly xoom, used to advertise unlimted free web space. I have been with them since 98/99 and have about 1.2 Gigabytes of my hard drive up there. But I seem to have gotten blocked just today. http://members.nbci.com/tekola is not a bad length for a URL. I use it for web pages and backup. Geocities does have problems crashing depending on your browser version.

Ahm... DO they really? Well, either it's me being weird, or there is no longer such a service.
Anyway, I dunno where to find it... Says something about hummingbird image --. Well, I'm not sure. I tried to find out some more information at the german page, but it didn't tell me much more.
Ok, that's it for now.

Uh... How? With GeoGuide? Actually I'm only having all my files and images at Geocities, but let me try that...
