Yes, they're down all right. I'll bet that's a result of their latest server move (they always have problems when they move servers).

December 11th, 2002, 20:33
hmm... they did promise to upgrade the server. finally their mission failed.

No Doubt

Okay, T35 is back up for me, but the images on my site still won't load and the sounds still will not play when clicked on! I swear, if I didn't have a full copy of my site on Gizba, my visitors would be so PO'ed at me right now -- the image problem has been going on at T35 for a week now.

This thread here in the T35 forums explains why T35 has so much problems, and none of it has anything to do with it being T35's fault:

Yeah, and T35's support forums aren't working either! I hope that so-called three year contract with the new free hosting server is for real so that T35 won't have these problems again next month! Plus, I hope they hurry because I'm not sure how much longer Gizba's cheap cogent bandwidth is going to hold out - already, Gizba is starting to show cracks.

What cracks is Gizba starting to show?

are you on the same server I am on with gizba?

I haven't seen any cracks/problems with gizba.com for a while since the summer.

And that is not bad as far as i am concerned

Cracker

Well, there's nothing really bad happening to Gizba yet except random lag times between page loads that may be up to 10 seconds. However, like people here have said before, any host that uses cheap cogent bandwidth will just get slow in the long run because cogent networks are overcrowded (oversold). Instead of the host getting focused traffic, they're sharing the traffic with thirty other clients - imagine how slow they would be if they all tried to use their "allowed" bandwidth.

Anyway, T35 is making progress:

Their FTP server actually prompts me for a password (but doesn't recognize it yet).

The websites are back up (but still have an image loading problem).

Their forums are still having errors.

Cracker, how do you know gizba.com is on cogent network?

The have their server at Rackshack.net and they have over 5 redundent fiber providers:

http://www.rackshack.net/english/aboutus/networks.asp

I dont think their site will get slower, it has been up for a couple of months with no sign of slowing down.

you say your site took 10 seconds to load one time, i think that is better then waiting over two weeks to get a server relocated, just to find out that ups lost it :)

I still say Gizba rocks
even without FTP

No, that's still happening. Gizba's connect times keep fluctuating, that's why I'm only hosting with them until T35 fully recovers, but then I'll keep Gizba as a backup host, like they were before T35 went down. There's nothing wrong with hosting my site on two hosts at the same time - I've always been doing that. However, right now I don't have a backup host, so if Gizba goes down right now, I'm SOL.

Is it really worth it? Correct me if I'm wrong, but these are free hosts right? Is all that hassle worth saving $10 or $15 a month? The webhosting plan I have (I won't say where, to keep this from being a shameless plug), allows me 12G bandwidth, 150M space, and 11 domain names. It works great for me because most of my sites don't get alot of traffic, and aren't any bigger than 100k/b of files.

If $15 is too much, this particular hosting service, and others I'm sure, have smaller hosting plans, or 11 of you could all go in together and pay a buck 50 or whatever each month. =)

How would you rather spend your time? Working on your website, or chasing after server problems? Websites were meant to do all the work for you while you go do soemthing else. By spending all your time fighting with free hosts, you accomplish *nothing*! :D

I agree with you entirely NukedWeb, having used paid hosting now for nearly two years now and no stress, but this is the free hosting forum after all and people are looking for free hosts. They might go out and spend 2 grand on the latest super duper computer, but they want free hosts, free software, free email, free wharever else they can get. And that free stuff has to be as good as their 2 grand super computer.

You can't change their thinking too much, but I have noticed a few popping into the paid hosting forum lately because they are just plain fed up with host hopping. :bandit2:

Well yeah, I know what forum this is ;) But I feel it's my independant duty to give people a tiny tap on the face to get them into the paid hosting world :D The mentality is "Why pay for hosting if the site makes no money?" The answer: "Find a way to make your site profitable, or donate to your own cause from your own pocket." It's nice to make a free site, or offer a site with free services if you have another site that makes money that at least lets you break even at the end of the month. =)

Aside from my paid hosting account, I also use that very same 2 grand super duper computer, to host my sites ;) A suggestion to anyone with a decent computer and cable or DSL: It's not hard to get a web server, PHP and MySQL for Windows.. :D

If your site uses PHP, or some other decent scripting language, it IS profitable in ways more than just banners. It's up to you to figure out a paid service model. If your entire site is nothing more than .html files and some pictures, there are hundreds of good free hosts out there that don't support scripting languages. Their lack of scripting support keeps their overhead down and keeps their service free. Free webhosts with resource-sensitive features WILL die out once they realize the err of their ways.

Yeah, if your cable ISP lets you run websites behind your connection.

None of em do, I checked ;) But..Comcast as I've been told (and experienced) periodically spies on your computer, which they are NOT allowed to do. The people that hooked up my modem from WideOpenWest encouraged me to run this stuff! I was going to anyways, but thats beside the point ;)
