I dunno about stas but I guess the kids' 56K modem at atomichosting.net couldn't cope. Just wait till they get dsl... then they'll be the fastest host around ;)

nope, it will still be slow

dsl or cable weren't designed to host sites

They already had DSL. I hate it when freeweb providers die, first Jagera.com then Gcsnet.net. ---- let them all close, don't open something unless you are going to keep them open instead of burning people.

Why do the make them ad-free? You cannot sustain a business without money so ---- if your planning making a FWP put ads on it, instead of people signing up then a week or a month later closing down with no word.

I think people will have to go back to places like geocities!, there is no room for FWP anymore unless they have backing by major corporations.

I have learnt my lesson from Jagera & Gcsnet and now Im on tera-byte's paid services ($9.95) per month plan. I am happy and to know their's tech support and the company won't die is a relief!

The problem with Geo----ties is that they offer ONLY space and nothing else! (No CGI, PHP, SSI... etc.)

Why is it that all the really big FWP's, don't seem to offer much? (Like domain hosting, cgi, php, ssi, etc)

Yeah I don't get it either... aren't Perl and PHP both free?

Sphosting.com

There free but they cost money to provide becuase they use more ram and cpu usage so less accounts can be put on each server. Also there are security risks.

yeah, atomichosting seems dead to me. I can't access the members area, nor ftp anything to my account.

The only reason that Angelfire, Tripod, Geocities, Fortunecity, and Nbci got really big and rich is because they all went IPO. They weren't rich enough to offer all those features back when they first started out, nor were FWP's all the rage then. And like Sphosting.com says, if all those FWP's offered those features now, they'd be in trouble because of all of the members they have on one server; therefore, they can't offer all those features without screwing up too many accounts.

Correct me if I'm worng, but I think they are targetting "beginners" or just people or only want to create a page or two about their pet dog...

I too think security is an issue you can realy mess up a server with a nasty script (by accident or on purpose)
plus if people don't write tight code then others can use the code for evil doing `$form_data` etc
plus they use extra CPU time
