i'm confused... how can they tell you what you can and can not do with somthing you pay for?

i some times open apache so i can test my websites out and some times i always have apache on... if they type my ip in and go to a webpage am i going to be in trouble?

this is from the @home website:

Can I attach a server to your network?
No. The @Home service is for private, residential use only and does not support or allow servers of any kind. However, @Work® offers products that allow the kind of connectivity a server requires. For more information, please visit @Work.

but how would they know if i have apache open?

The only high speed net service that I've come across that allows servers is http://www.telocity.com.

I think you'll be okay as long as you don't get any traffic to your server while running it. What are they gonna do? Kick you off their service and force you to join a competitor?

Maybe that's what they want...

Well, my cable connection surely won't let me, but I did it for a weekend when I put up a messageboard on my PC while I was gone on a mini vacation so some people I know online could post there for whatever reason (im a nerd, i know, leave me alone :p)

SNET DSL allows it though, dunno if all DSL providers do.

Simple, write a bot that checks if you have port 80 open every few hours.

I'd be careful. @home *does* do regular checks with bots that check if you are running any kind of a server. It doesn't matter whether you are getting hardly any traffic or running a full-fledged webhost. If you have the http port, ftp port, or any other port they scan open, then @home will likely get peaved and send you a warning, if not delete your account on the spot.

What are you planning to use it for anyway? @home caps their upload speeds at around 25 KB/sec or so.

It's understandable why @home would do this, they simply don't have the money to provide the bandwith for such things. This is not something unusual, in fact most broadband providers don't allow personal servers.

an easier way to get away with it would be to set up an ftp server on a port used by say.. napster or some other useless app, then just say the traffic's from that.

btw, @home regularly checks and kicks people off in australia

Napster makes your computer a server, how come they don't kick you for that?

I know somebody that ran a website on his @home cable connection for a long time (i think several years) and he never was caught.

My upload speed isnt capped, sometimes I upload at 120kb etc.

Hey people, nice idea, worked for me, change your ports to in 3000, like i did. They can't check that! Ex: http: port 3000 MySQL: 3306 Ftp: 3100 Anythin else: 3200 .and so on try my webserver and MySQL server: http://prog-home.pandora.be:3306 (MySQL) http://prog-home.pandora.be:3000 (http)

Technically speaking, that's cheating. But.....

It works! I took down my servers. They can kick you of, and my parents wont like that. So if they find out...

Well, gues I'm gonna be using free webhosts for a while.
