I use PSP (paint shop pro) for that purpose, just download the free version. Or you can just use <img src="filename.gif" height"height" width="width">

Still think you should use PSP, it has an export to GIF function. There you can seriously decrease the amount of space (less colors,dithering,transparantcy,...)

Try spinwave (http://www.spinwave.com) for free online crunching. I use photo impact offline.

With PS6, you can choose to save the image for the web, there will be a lot of option for you to optimize your image.

The only way you can reduce image size without it looking awful, though, is to use less color and make the canvas size smaller.

Fireworks does a great job of optimizing images.

if it's an animated gif, I suggest you use Ulead Gif Animator, it's the best for optimizing and creating animated gif's.

I use Selteco Bannershop Gif Animator and Macromedia Fireworks.

The animator is pretty good (better then Ulead I think) while Fireworks is just king of the heap. It's crunching ability is second to none :)

Fireworks has a nice optimiser for still images but Ulead does beat it on animated gifs as it removes redundant pixels ect

not tried Selteco Bannershop so can't comment
