I friend of mine has asked my help. He has been assigned to convert a great number of docs to web pages at work. He isn't allowed to use anything else than FP and he is no web designer. If I help him out and write the pages I will do so in a text editor.

Here's my problem. I don't know the first thing about FP, but I know it's evil rumor. I've seen the output, so I know what's wrong with that. But what exactly are the famous "extensions"? Does FP have a problem handling HTML that is written in another app? Can it edit and upload "clean" HTML?

Basically, can the pages be maintained with FP if I write them in a text editor?

I don't see for what reason your friend may only use FP. Use MS Word, and save the webpages to HTML. The easyest way I know!
FP sucks, if I had the money for Dreamweaver, I'd have it already. Using FP Expess now of the table, doing the rest of the coding by hand.

I have a limited past knowledge of FrontPage. I did the conversion once and it seem to take everything ok. It did add its own stuff to the "clean" HTML but the site continued to look and work like it did before. This particular site used forms. The FP extentions provides the script that runs the forms instead of a CGI bin with a script. I did have to go in and rebuild the forms in FrontPage to work with the FP extentions. You should be ok if the site is straight forward.

Great. Sounds OK then. It's mainly text in a basic two cell table. The whole thing is very big, around 100 html files and each file is in itself extremely big. I would make 10 pages out of each single one if I could choose but they want it like that. "Easy to read".
That FP adds stuff is OK. Makes it harder for my friends employer to discover our little "fraud". Thanks a lot. You saved me from installing and trying to understand the crap :D

BTW FP writes extremely messy tables. Cleaned up and looking the same the files are 1/3 as big (kB).
