How do you reinstall Win2k after formatting the hard drive?
The method I used before is kinda stupid and time wasting, but at least it works. First, I installed Win98 (since setup can be run under DOS [or whatever it's called] ... the setup file on my win2k CD can't be run under DOS) then I run the win2k installer under win98 and upgraded... and it's installed.
I want to know if there are any simpler and smarter alternatives. Thanks.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP Can be installe dby booting from the CD.
Simply go into your BIOS, change the boot order to make it so your CD-ROm is the first device that boots.
Than just turn on your computer, and it'll ask to "..press any key to boot from cd .." and baan. Windows 2000 installed.

If you can't get that to work it's also possible to create boot install disks. Keep 4 floppy disks handy and look in the "bootdisk" folder on your Win2k CD.
Then all you have to do is restart with the first one and feed it the next ones when asked :)

Yeah, the floppy method is what I have to use since my CDs aren't bootable.

I do have a boot disk, with CD driver and everything.. it can read the CD, but the setup program won't start because it "can only be executed under Win32s" or whatever the message was...
Are you sure I can run the installer by booting from the CDROM?

is it a burnt copy or a real WIn2k CD?
If it is a burnt copy, they made not have made the cd bootable. In that case, you'll need bootdisks.

It's a burned CD... from a legit one (with holograms on it and all). A true "backup". :p
Well, the problem now isn't with the boot disk, it's that I can't run the setup program after getting rid of windows. In the past, I had to install Win98 first in order to get the setup running... because, like I said in my prev. post, the damn thing won't execute under DOS (or whatever you call that command prompt thingy).

Once you insert the CD and reboot, all you ahve to do is press enter when it says "Press Enter to Boot From CD..."
And it'll do the rest from checking your system, to installing the setup files, to rebooting, running the setup program and install Win2k.
If your getting an error saying that you cannot run setup in DOS, than either 1) you aren't doing it right or 2) the CD wasn't a copy - basically they took the contents and copied them over to a new cd, rather than doing a "cd copy" and keeping the bootable program.

Ok, thanks, I'll try it out... if it doesn't work, I'll have to go back to my old way of doing it......

BTW, do you know which file(s) the system looks for for the boot up from the CD? If there is such thing, I figure I would try to locate it first before formatting and all.....

Not a bootdisk. You need to create the bootdisks from the Win2k cd. They're in the bootdisk folder.

Carebear and I are speaking of two different methods LeX.
One way is to boot from CD
The other is to boot with a bootdisk.

I haven't seen a Windows 2000 Upgrade cd. I know XP doesn't have an "upgrade" CD, it's simply 1 CD which allows you to run it in DOS (as a bootable CD) or in Windows (which will reboot and run it as a bootable CD).
I dont M$ ever made a Upgrade CD for Win2k. Only for 98, 95 and Me.

What I had to do is install a minimal version of win98 and upgrade to win2k.
because win2k's setup.exe wont start under dos
The options it gives me when I open the setup is either a full install or an upgrade, so I guess there is an win2k upgrade :)

Yes, the Win2k cd is both a full install and upgrade, not just an upgrade CD.
Your not suppose to run setup.exe
Do you guys know how to boot from CD? I dont mean to type anything, load the CD, reboo the computer, let the CD boot.
