so i get home last night and my monitor has developed shadows!!

for example, i right-click (winxp) on my desktop and as i scroll through the menu, the items are highlighted as normal but there is also horizontal line that extends as a shadow along the entirety of my screen (and moves as i scroll)

another example, if i open a window, not full screen, the left and right side of the window has, you guessed it, shadows that extend to the left and the right of the screen

sorry, i don't have a screen-shot, i'm at work at the moment

have any of you ever heard of/seen this before?? i'm going to try out my monitor on my dad's pc to see if it does the same thing....what do you think the chances are that my monitor has had it??

I guess your monitor is about to die...

I don't think its your monitor

the monitor has no way to know the (x,y) of your mouse pointer to do such a shadow.

I'd go with either a bad video card connection or a corruptded windows.

Try removing/reinsserting the video card,
reinstall drivers
change resolution/color depth
and lastly *maybe* reinstalling windows, but I dnt think so.

i already tried the refresh rate and resolution and all that

and uninstalled and reinstalled my graphics card drivers (but not the graphics card - i don't "do" hardware)

Wojtek, what you say about the monitor not knowing what your mouse is doing makes perfect sense actually, good point....but makes my fears a little worse unfortunately

what's involved in "removing/reinserting" a graphics card....carefully open case, locate card (how??), pull it out, put it back in the same spot, reboot (fingers crossed, hope for the best)???

First of all, make sure you have one... if that's a go, ground yourself by touching the metal of the inside of the case. Grab a screwdriver and remove the screw holding the graphics card into teh slot. Hold the card by the edges and then pop it back in. Make sure to seat it firmly and screw it back in.

Also, make sure the computer is off before handling any computer components. :D

I never grounded myself
Is that bad? :)

Also, your graphical card is the card that has your monitor cable inserted in it.

I get the same thing, sometimes

It goes away with a restart, though, and sometimes if you refresh the screen.

what you said sounds very much like "bleeding". If like Daniel said your monitor is on its last breaths one of the things that can happen is that colours (shapes) will start to bleed through to the right.
If at all possible try putting another monitor on your pc and see if it does the same and put your monitor on another pc. If the other monitor shows the screen fine and your monitor still has the same problem on another computer then it's to blame. If both monitors have the same problem when connected to your computer then it is most likely the graphics card.
