View Full Version : Download mirror?

My problem is this: I have a music fansite at a paid hosting account now, but I'm using 700MB+ of my 1GB bandwidth limit currently. I've just completed a screensaver that is 4.99MB (5233KB or so) big because of the 11 music clips that it carries. Yes, I know; stupid of me. Now I'm afraid that this file will carry me over my bandwidth limit, and I would like to avoid having to pay for more bandwidth, since my hosting bills are pretty hefty as they are. I don't want to edit this screensaver any more, because I've already whittled it down from 7MB, and I don't want to take it apart any more.

So what it comes down to is that I need a download mirror for this file. I don't mind linking to a page that shows ads before the download begins, so hotlinking is not required. Just 5MB+ file storage space with file size limit of over 5MB. File storage sites like znail.com won't work because my file is just over their 5MB storage space. Oh, and I'm from Asia.

If nothing works I guess I'll just buy more bandwidth, but I'd really like to ensure that I've exhausted all options first. I'm currently using pcpages.com, but I don't know how long that will last.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jay I would recommend you pay for extra bandwidth or if you can, upgrade to the next plan. If too many download that screensaver on any free host that allows it, you will likely lose your account quick smart. Which paid host only offers 1GB?

Thanks for the replies. :)

Waloxspace: Thanks, I'll try that.

Jan: Yes, I'm well aware of that. I was more of hoping for something like come2store, which doesn't work because after 45 minutes of uploading my file on a 56k it tells me I have an error and my file is not uploaded. As for my paid host, I'm on a 50MB space 1GB bandwidth plan. Hosting does not come cheap in Singapore when you don't have a credit card.

lotsofissues: It's zipped already! It only reduced the file by about 0.5MB.

Epidemik: They only accept people from US and Canada and I forgot where else, but certainly not Singapore.

[Edit] To clarify, I'm not looking for "unlimited" bandwidth. 5MB+ space and 300MB-500MB bandwidth is fine. The more mirrors I have, the less likely each mirror will have too many people downloading the file.

www.freehomepages.com

50MB Web Space
Unlimited hits
Unlimited bandwidth
Fast servers
Browser uploading

a word of advice: it is against lycos.co.uk terms to use the service as a "mirror" so to speak. the above host does but it takes you to a page similar to come2store first b4 you dl.

Thanks striker. :)

I did find out it's against the Lycos terms of service, which is why I'm not using it. PcPages is actually FreeHomePages, and I'm already using that - I don't want to creat multiple accounts and abuse their service.

Anyway, I think I'll just buy more bandwidth and use PcPages for as long as is possible. Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Why don't you get hosting from a company that accepts money orders that's not based in Singapore? There are much better hosting companies in other contries that accept money orders...a lot of Aussie hosts come to mind...if you want to know a list you can PM me :classic2:

Yeah, I realise I didn't phrase that clearly. I mean that I'm already using a free service powered by FreeHomePages, together with my existing paid service, and I'll keep it that way. :)

For various reasons, a money order is too much trouble for me to obtain, and ditto for a debit card. My preferred method of payment is by bank transfer, and it's easier to complete such transactions when both parties have accounts at Singaporean banks, if I'm not wrong.
